I said this over at Ratskep, but I enjoyed posting it so much I'm going to post it over here too.

The guy in the video had both a meat cleaver and a pointy chef's knife. Why should anyone other than licensed butchers or professional chefs have access to these weapons? There is no necessity for a home cook to have either. Actually, there is no necessity for anyone to cook at home at all. Being surrounded by sharp cutting instruments and heavy cooking pans is incredibly dangerous, anyone could snap at any moment. All it would take is one bad day at work, one argument with the bus driver and chop-chop bam-bam, there go the neighbors. Then there are vegetable peelers, which can take off an entire layer of skin, and gas cookers exploding and taking out scores of innocent bystanders. No, the only sane course of action is to immediately ban all home cooking other than microwave meals prepared by professionals under controlled conditions. Those wishing to cook as a hobby could join a cooking club, and after rigorous screening and testing be allowed to keep deadly utensils in a locked safe on the club premises.

Be careful, someone might take you seriously - especially over there.

Well I don't think they were ignoring him, it's just until he acted, what could they do? I think the issue is not one of intelligence but how we use it if we can use it at all. Now obviously this is going to inspire some netloons to tweet their 24 style fox fantasies from some and others are going to say "better a million genocidal maniacs go free than one innocent man get a £10 fine for swagging a bag of opal fruits!" but really what realistic options are there other than to watch and hope to catch them organising such actions rather than after they have committed them.

In this case that sadly does not alter the result.

I read the attackers are Somalian? What is their background? What happened to them to make them capable of behaving this way? Have they been damaged by a vicious war?

Religious dogma preying on vulnerable, unstable minds .. rationalising horrendous acts in the name of their tyrannical god.
