I think sensible gun control is needed , I don't think a population that gets themselves hooked on Meth or Crack can just be given free access to as many guns and as much ammo as they like . I'm not a paranoid anti-gun nut but I'd rather not live in a place where you can get shot for knocking on the wrong door looking for a party after the pub closes . This idea that we would all be safer if only we all carried guns is straight out of the wild west .... and wasn't that a nice safe time ?

Here we have a problem in that lots of folks who have guns shouldn't, and we have a strong lobby that fights any attempt to instill sanity into the system. I sent all (or almost all, anyway) of my guns off when Ayaan moved in, because I knew she hadn't been trained. Not keeping guns in a house with someone who doesn't have a very good grasp of the rules and procedures.

Firearms are potentially more dangerous than vehicles, so carry permits should require more training and testing, with more stringent criminal and psychological standards. But Prohibition will only reap the same results with firearms that it did with alcohol and drugs. And we see how those worked out, eh? Prohibition only multiplies the amount of illegal and unregulated access. Doesn't work, at least, not in US culture.

Then there would have been two people to go on a gun rage instead of 1, the world doesnt divide up into nice sane gun owners and bad criminals. The more guns the more people use them on each other

A chance, yes (and had I been there and armed, I would have tried to take him out myself, that's for sure). However, bringing down a guy who is wearing kevlar is a bitch - successful head shots and leg shots are a damn sight more difficult than body shots, what I remember from my training in the 1980ies (I did pistol and rifle practical shooting as a hobby, in addition to more ordinary target practice).

If someone ever want to shoot me or my family dead with almost 100% certainty they will succeed which is why it is in my interest to live in a society where the chances of that happening are as small as possible
Which is why I am far less likely to be shot dead in the UK without a gun than any American is with one.

I also don't trust police with guns and I hope to see them kept to a minimum as well (the police generally don't trust themselves with guns either which is my most have said they would resign from the force if forced to carry).

Its the old cult of the individual ,master of ones own destiny, rugged individual bullshit. My survival relies on others simply as that without them I die.

Rights are human creations so as natural as a car or a gun which isnt my usual definition of natural and you can't physically protect shit if enough people wish you harm. Best way of protecting youself is to ensure your neighbour knows he will be arrested if he possess a gun and that law is enforced
