If the buses stop working I will go home (100 metres away) and work from the internet (which I have done before). If the internet stops working I don't have a job and as this forum won't be around what would be the point in living?
Very true about the forum, of course. We'll all no doubt be heading for the purple KoolAid if that ever happens...

So you are indeed, a just lay down a die, moron. Can you comprehend not wanting to be like that? Even a little?

Could I interest you in boarding a ship for a free vacation provided by the government?

You can walk 100 meters without the government's help? Impressive.

Every house in the UK has wall sockets and plugs. Not every house has a cow. It's a matter of useful practicalities - if every house had a cow, then everyone knowing how to milk it would be a distinct advantage.

Mind you, having seen people step into a revolving door and not know what to do next when it doesn't automatically turn for them, I guess I can see the future.
Most UK houses have multiple sockets and plugs, if one doesn't work use another. Through I've been thinking I can't remember the last time a fuse on a plug went, do they even have fuses these days?. I've seen the wiring on sockets especially lights blow but never a plug on a device?.

If every house had a cow better get cow milking specialists to go around milking who you can probably pay minimum wage while you go and do something more useful like this forum

In London I believe every house must have a bus stop within 200 metres and wait for government paid for disability buggies exist for people who can't walk more than 20 metres. Where I live probably there are too many and you can get collisions on the pavement (sidewalk)

Circuit breakers now, not fuses, unless your house is really ancient. And I'd class replacing a fuse or re-setting a circuit breaker in the same category as changing a lightbulb - everybody should be able to do it... (and if it keeps blowing, either to reduce the number of appliances in the circuit, or at least isolate the one which causes the circuit to fail, and take it in for repair...). But as I've already said, I draw the line at re-wiring a switch or a plug...

I'm waiting for Collector to give us a joke which starts "How many MrJonnos does it take to change a lightbulb..." :hehe:

None. He calls someone from government social services to do it for him.

Because unsanctioned screwing in of light bulbs should be banned by civilians, as they might electrocute themselves and we have to protect society after all, so we could never allow that, you know...

My feeling on this is that it's not a life saving measure, but actually shonky capitalism. Essentially force people to undertake economic activity, as a way to inflate an economy. I simply can't believe that there are significant numbers of people like Jonno in our political systems that want a nanny state to that extent.
What % of the population would feel confident in wiring a plug, I honestly don't know but its getting pretty rate for anyone to do it these days. You could have mass education in how to wire a plug or you could adjust your society where that becomes a rare , specialised and mostly forgotten skill. You think its worthwhile spending money on ensuring everyone knows how to milk a cow. Sure a few people need to know how to do it but millions get real?
It's ridiculously easy, Jonno. And no one is forcing people to do it who don't feel confident to do it. As I said, this is all perfectly legal and reasonable in New Zealand, and they have a lower death rate per capita from electrical faults.

Yeah I know about the circuit breaker, you press a switch and your electricity comes back on. I can change a plug but haven't done so in 25 years (it was part of our school physics practical exam). light-bulb I can do, light socket absolutely not.

I can also put together Ikea furniture (but hate doing so), never touched an axe , I'm ok with screwdrivers but I've never used a hammer in my adult life.

I have fired and reloaded a .22 rifle which I learned how to do at school (British school with a rifle range!!), one thing I would really like to be able to do but never managed was bowl overarm in cricket

Fat lot of good that will do if you are living on the 15th floor of a block of flats, humanity is urban these days and is becoming more urban by the day. Most of us left rural life behind centuries ago and good riddance. I prefer to know the bus timetable its far more useful than knowing 'tactical movement'
Have you ever been in a city during a disaster? I was in Brisbane in Australia during the big floods a couple of years ago. Major access routes where blocked, and electricity was out in some places, for up to 4 or 5 days. In that time, the city ground to a halt. People were seriously running out of food and milk etc, and even if you could drive anywhere, petrol was becoming scarce. Living in a city it is even MORE important to have a personal disaster management plan of sorts. Things go pear shaped in big cities VERY quickly.

Electrical home work is regulated, you can do just about anything (wrongly in my opinion) but for some thing you are required to notify the authorities. If you arent certified as an electrician you won't get a safety certificate and you house may be unsellable

The funny thing is, that in most government and university workplaces here in Australia you aren't allowed to change a lightbulb for fear of some workplace accident. You have to call in the properties and facilities people to do it for you (and usually wait a week till they get around to it). :fp:
