You don't need a permit to buy ammo, IIRC. I bought a fair amount of ammo in FLA back in the late '70s.
There's an age limit, though. How old were you at the time, Tero?

Events happen all the time, even "World's Dumbest..." has video of senior citizens opening up on armed crooks.

True. I paid for ammo I didn't buy more than once in high school.

Hmm. Twice in my life I've had to pull out a sidearm in response to violent intent on the part of others. I didn't have to fire it either time. The aggressors made themselves very scarce very quickly. Nothing was ever reported. I wonder how many such instances go unaccounted for in the statistics? I know it's just anecdotal, but statistics are made up of compiled anecdotes and the records made of them. OTOH, when a firearm is actually discharged during a violent conflict, it's almost always reported.

Equalizers intimidate thugs.

As for the reportage, it may or may not reach us, in the mountains of "news" available each day they tend to get lost, especially if the area isn't a currently "interesting" location.

We lived in Kerrville, TX for a bit. The local paper ran a 'crimebeat' secion once a week that was unintentionally hilarious. It had stuff like 'large cat spotted walking down Main Street' and 'local boys told to tone it down for playing loud music'.

Here's an actual article up right now:
Missing mental patient found 1 hour later

A male patient escaped from the Hill Country Crisis Stabilization Unit on Friday morning, and was on the streets for more than an hour before being apprehended by Kerrville police.

Linda J. Werlein, CEO of Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disability Centers, said this was the first time a patient had escaped its facility, located at 643 Sheppard Rees Road.

Another...
Man wounded in beating

A local man was severely beaten early Sunday morning and reportedly managed to escape further abuse and go to the hospital.

According to a police report, the man said he was beaten by two other men after going to a home near First and Travis streets.
Who knew? :dunno:

The NRA prints such reports in their "American Rifleman" magazine, but as I don't like the NRA any more than you likely do, I won't defer to them as a source.

The Armed Citizen has a blog that has been on hiatus for over a year, but when it was being regularly updated, they had plenty of new articles each week involving armed self-defense incidents. Most of the ones that we hear about are the ones where shots were fired by the defender, and yet, in the majority of armed self-defense instances, no shots are fired. The incidents you hear about are the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

Don't need no stinking permit to buy ammo in Fla, and don't need no stinking ID (unless you look like you're under 21). Just go into Wally World and buy whatever you need. Get a long gun there, too, 15 minute service - no fuss, no muss, no bother. Takes 3 days for a handgun because of the meddling fucking Federales.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Really? I'm in Massachusetts, widely regarded as one of the strictest gun control states, and every time I've bought a handgun it's been a relatively quick transaction. :what:
