Hate that movie. I seriously contemplated walking out of the theater during that one. I decided to watch it till the end but hated it. Even though it is the topic I am very much interested in.

I loved it. I though it was very funny at times, especially all the stuff about him making up stories to protect his son from the horror of what was going on, and getting the other people to join in with him too.

JOZeldenrust wrote:I really liked Umberto D. and The bicycle thief by Ettore Scola, Una Giornata Particolare is one of my all time favourite films, and Der Baader-Meinhoff Complex was pretty awesome. I didn't like Salo.

Another cool one is Six String Samurai.

Anyone else like Almodovars work? (Volver, Todo sobre mi madre, La mala educacion, Habe con ella etc.)
I've seen quite a few of Almodovar's films. I like them a lot but they do tend to blur together in my mind - I think it's because he tends to revisit the same themes in many of his films and also employs similar cinematographical techniques.

I don't know any of the other films you mentioned.
Umberto D., Ladri di bibiclette and Una giornata particolare are classic Italian films from the social realism tradition. I was mistaken, by the way: Una giornata particolare is by Ettore Scola, Umberto D. and Ladri di biciclette are by Vittorio De Sica. Italian cinema from 1945 - 1970 (approx.) is pretty awesome. Other good ones are Stromboli, Viaggio in Italia and Novecento (more of an epic).

Six-String Samurai is weird to say the least. Kind of Blues Brothers meets The wizard of Ozz meets Mad Max.

Almodovar is like a European Tim Burton, though not really into fantasy. Lots of lush cinematography, parallel story arcs and almost all of his films revolve around strong women (often Penelope Cruz). His latest, Los abrazos rotos, looks to be no exception, though I haven't seen it yet.

I am watching "The visitor" now. About a Professor Walter Vale who has lost interest in his job and just coasts through life, when he discovers two people in his appartment in New York. They turn out to be illegal immigrants.

WTF? That film Six String Guitar is a pile of cack! I wasn't expecting that. Hopefully Faust will be better.

From Švankmajer? I liked it. Haven't watched it in years, though. Dunno, maybe I just liked it because it was weird. Little Otik was rubbish. And I was disillusioned while watched the extras on the DVD. In an interview, Švankmajer is asked why he included this scene or that scene. His answer was basically that he didn't do anything for any specific reason. He doesn't think too much about it. Rather, he just does it. So in other words, all the crazy shit in his films is meaningless. It's all based on his whim and little or nothing else. Fucking twat.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

This... is a good film. Once you get past the old style, pre-method acting. A very atheistic film I think. Or agnostic at least. I'm surprised he got away with it in the 50s, although it was Sweden.

Try Winter Light if you want to see Bergman really taking a stab at religion.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that Art House stalwart, Betty Blue.
