In this instance, I think I side with the Musselmen. There doesn't seem to be a valid legal basis for deportation because the kid doesn't want to shake hands. If it's a problem for the school, then the kid can go to another school.
“When I was in college, I took a terrorism class. ... The thing that was interesting in the class was every time the professor said ‘Al Qaeda’ his shoulders went up, But you know, it is that you don’t say ‘America’ with an intensity, you don’t say ‘England’ with the intensity. You don’t say ‘the army’ with the intensity,” she continued. “... But you say these names [Al Qaeda] because you want that word to carry weight. You want it to be something.” - Ilhan Omar

Don't ask why you should kick them out. Ask why you ever let them immigrate in the first place.

Unless it is illegal to be muslim, or a muslim who follows these particular rules in Switzerland, then I don't see how it is a basis for deportation. If a born citizen of Switzerland would have the option of converting to Islam and adopting the same rules whilst staying inside the law then the decision is not valid.

I agree that people who are immigrating should need to integrate, but that is in respect to the laws and traditions, not personal preferences. Sounds like the schools issue to deal with.

Same here. I don't think it's relevant that they're Muslim. If someone simply refused to shake hands with women for personal reasons, what would be different?

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

What a peculiar custom, this shaking of the teachers' hands. Seems overly familiar. But, I dunno, I think I like it. Wondering...what is the desired intent? Is it a show of respect or a display of friendship? Or maybe a little of both?

Anyway, as to whether the family should be deported, that seems an extreme overreaction despite the unpleasantness to one's sensibilities the boys' refusal to shake their teachers' hands engenders.
Hypothetical: What if a student were incapable of shaking hands because of a physical deformity or impairment :ask: Of course this case is different, I suppose, because the boys are perfectly cable of shaking hands but simply unwilling.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

A spokesman for the Basel-Country canton, where Therwil is located, said naturalisation proceedings had been put on hold.

But he said such suspensions were common in citizenship procedures.

The migration office in Basel is seeking more information about the circumstances under which the father’s asylum claim was accepted, according to the AFP news agency.
So, the halting of the citizenship process might be completely unrelated to the handshaking issue.

And similarly, the west wants to move to muslim countries... Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Syria... we take the whole package and leave our nasty islamophobic propaganda behind or GTFO.

But the west can't do that. It always has to bomb the place to bits because muslims because islamic terrorism because muslim misogyny because who the fuck cares? They're foreigners and this is the west. Double standards reign.

So as you say, fuck 'em... it's the western, islamophobic, imperialist way

It does not take any imagination, nor is it a case of anthropomorphism, to recognise human civilised traits such as language, religion, legends, art ant tool making among Aboriginal communities that precede white invasion by tens of thousands of years. The evidence is palpable and irrefutable.
