I've just shaded a cell in an excel sheet a slightly different colour to the others. That's my contribution to the UKs GDP for today....

No, I don't think even government reaches the bloated level that universities can. At least in the US.
I never noticed bloat in French Uni when I was a student, and my cousin who's a don in U of Pennsylvania doesn't complain about any there either.

Not really true. Some of us have long been on skeleton crews because there's no money to support adequate staffing.
I think that can be a sign of bloat, and is because universities try to do too many different things. It's not that they have too few resources, it is they spread them out too thinly. This creates the illusion of under staffing, and encourages more bloat as they attempt to provide adequate staffing.

Why aren't we all working 3-4 hour days?
:o  :? Slave hours those are! I actually "work" significantly less than that on my shift :hehe:

I monitor computer things at night, which means I occasionally look at things. Sometimes things break and I have to call people to fix those things :{D Some simple things I have to fix myself, which counts as work  Maybe a couple of calls from people wanting something something simple. Cause if it was complicated I tell them to call back in the morning :smoke: I think the biggest average chunk of my "work" time is reading my morning emails and what work other people have planned. Yup, my biggest amount of work is reading about other peoples work :funny: And to top it all off, I have a new trainee who is already mostly trained because he worked the job previously. For training purposes I make him do all the work :{D I think about work too, and if I were a lawyer that would be billable and count :hehe: Naw, I didn't move those heavy boxes. But I thought about it :razzle:

Ludicrous.

If you have a charge (or number of charges that you are bound by law/policy/charter/etc. to provide) and your resources are spread too thinly, then you have inadequate resources! :fp:

He clearly doesn't know what he is talking about. The doctrine of neoliberalism that is followed in the US, Australia etc, has seen a reduction in the level of core funding and resources that most state education institutes and universities receive from government. Universities are required more and more these days to source funding from external sources. I.e. it's just a big market in education. That doesn't lead to bloat, it leads to ruthless penny pinching.

edit: fucken quotes. I give up.

I meant 4x1h in the 8h window. I actually work with my hands. We don't have robots to do it. On industrial scale it has pumps etc and filtrations are automatic. But it's not faster on 100kg vs 100g.
