During his time as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, has undone a lot of the damage John Howard has wreaked with his atrocious tax scale changes. He has also had the courage to use budgetary measures that resulted in the global recession of a few years ago to bypass Australia, and he identified and removed 52 legislative disadvantages that de facto couples suffer under compared to formally married ones.

So, what has Gillard got to show for herself? Oh,that's right: she increased funding for evangelists as school chaplains tenfold. Being a self-professed atheist that indicates a profound character flaw. She's clearly beholden to the ALP's arch-conservative #1 numbers man, Don Farrell. She is the kind of politician that makes so many voters cynical of politicians.

Labor is fucked after this. You can't have a party that is so self-centred remain credible. This (Rudd winning) is going to do MASSIVE damage to the Labor brand. This is going to leave long term scars. Gillard might have got flogged at the election, but Labor as a brand would still have a bit of credibility. That's all gone now.

I honestly don't think that is the whole story. She made a series of bad political mistakes, and simply does not resonate with the electorate. The effect has been exaggerated by the press, but, in electoral terms, is still a big-time negative for the labour party.

All polls have been showing, very strongly, that Gillard has absolutely no hope against Abbot, but Rudd has at least a fighting chance...

Rudd will get a bounce and then a thrashing, I expect. The reason why Julia "does not resonate with the electorate" has to be in a large part due to a biased media. The media is the only conduit between the PM and the people. The fact that the media and the people believe that this is one of the worst governments ever in Australia is prime evidence that the media has biased the public. The objective facts show that this is actually an incredibly successful government.

Not sure. In economic terms, overall, I think it's done pretty well. However, there were a continuing series of issues of competence and bad governance, to do with the way government money was spent (schools, the home insulation debacle and others), plus the inept handling of the carbon tax back-flip.

Bollocks. Huge amount of legislation has passed, including serious reform. The "carbon tax backflip" is a beat up. We have an ETS. It's only a carbon tax for three years. The schools and insulation things were beat ups as well. They were incredibly successful (and don't forget that the Schools stuff was Kev's). They saved us from recession and the effects the rest of the world felt.

So then you shouldn't have a problem seeing the difference between now and the Hawke/Keating era. Additionally, we've seen a Labor party cave in an attempt to save their own seats. They aren't thinking about stable governance. They are thinking about themselves. They are a party with next to zero credibility now.
