Well, individuals can choose to not allow their photos to be linked to. If that's not the case though, a lot of people were confused when they launched click menu to choose different sizes, because if you just right-click and try and copy the default preview image it will just copy a blank gif (as with the non-downloadable photos).

The thing I like with Flickr is that it automatically creates several sizes which you can use/link to and even edit online, but it also keeps the original intact which can be downloaded/linked to as well.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments everyone. I believe I will go with flickr and Dropbox, as I have both photo and non-photo content to host. I'll likely coast on a free flickr account until after Christmas is paid off. I wanted to use my gmail login, unfortunately flickr seemed unwilling to do so without pulling in my G+ info, which I didn't want linked. So I now have yet another email account I'll never use. I hurt my head trying to come up with a screen name that was not already taken, so I'll familiarize myself and sign up to Dropbox later.

I've half a mind to set up my own web and ftp server, but I've got more important projects at hand. (Not that it would take much. I have a working dual P3 box with a 160 GB RAID 1 array ready and willing to go. It wouldn't require anything more powerful, I don't think.) I don't incline towards the effort to maintain it, though.

Flickr (Pro account) and Photobucket.

Flickr seems to insist on converting everything to jpg, and I use a lot of png's that need to stay png (and gif too). Is there a fix for this?

I signed up for Dropbox, but it doesn't appear to have given me the bonus 250 MB, not that I care, but I hope you got yours. It uses a synching tool to share files via virtual folders, but that does not appear to be essential, which is good, because I can't get it to work. (Which might have to do with going through two SOHO routers and essentially three firewalls. I'll have to investigate when the urge strikes me.)

Nah, didn't get any extra, well thanks for trying anyway.

You can use db without the file sync, but for ease of use it is really essential. I have used it on several linux and some windows computers, and never had any problems. Tight firewalls can probably be a problem, though.
