Re: Tea Party vs Occupy Wall Street
One of the things to keep in mind about the US is that it's not like most other countries in that it's not homogenous. Even though we speak the same language, and superficially have the same culture, it's very, very different in different states. It's more like Europe as a whole than it is like any country in Europe, except we all share the same language. So when you say "Merkins" like that, it's pretty much like saying "Europeans" like that. And you'll note it makes less sense.
Several people I've met overseas have told me that this insight made it easier for them to understand how all the people they'd met who were "from the US" could be from the same country.
This is partly because the US is so large; you see these articles about how they busted some polygamist, you have to get that these people were living in a place far enough from anyone else that nobody figured out what was going on for thirty or forty years. Those militia people up in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming? Same deal. There's a reason they live way the fuck out there.
And that's also the thing about guns; there's real, actual wild animals that will kill and eat you when you're that far away from civilization. Not to mention people who are on the run. So having guns around is a necessary precaution. If you don't you probably will not make it. And no one might ever find out.
Just a few things to consider for you folks who are used to "wildlands" that haven't seen an actual wild predator in several centuries.

What better way to judge two groups than how they behave

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

OWS spitting on a Coast Guard woman. The incident that Rep. Pelosi was alluding to took place in March 2010, when Rep. Emanuel Cleaver accused one rouge Tea Party demonstrator of spitting on him. Video of the accused incident went viral with no clear evidence of the actual spitting, other than Rep. Cleaver’s reaction to a protester appearing to yell “kill the bill” in his face, adjacent to a Capital Hill police officer who shows little reaction to the accused ejected saliva. One Tea Party group offered a $15,000 reward for proof of the spitting.

There are some aspects of that description that apply to Oz as well. No big predators, maybe, but many a feral, introduced pest that needs a rifle around to control the numbers...Schneibster wrote:One of the things to keep in mind about the US is that it's not like most other countries in that it's not homogenous. Denying racism and racist acts is, in my opinion a most insidious form of racism...it puts the burden on the person making the accusation to provide the evidence. If it's so subtle that only the person it's directed at experiences it, then there's no evidence.Schneibster wrote:Lie. Canada has even more open space than the US, and just as wild if not wilder. We are all very different from Europe, in ways that are similar, I think.

That's what the Republican Teagagger Party and the Libertardians would have us believe, anyway. Personally I think it needs to be exposed to the light of day and those who do it as well. Sunlight is an excellent disinfectant, and I have to say that I think racists are germs.maiforpeace wrote:Denying racism and racist acts is, in my opinion a most insidious form of racism...it puts the burden on the person making the accusation to provide the evidence.
