I saw this yesterday. I haven't been keeping up with news from America much lately and I was truly shocked. I don't know if it is as clear cut as Jon Stewart presents it - but it seem ridiculous. And not just what they're doing, but also that most of the media seems to be ignoring it. It seems to me that the workers' existing job related health coverage should cover them. Where is the city in this? Did New York fire these guys and drop their health care or something?

Also, a lot of people involved weren't there in any official capacity - they were emergency workers from outside NY who went there on their own dime to volunteer.

Something like that. I recall from the clip that some of them were taken off duty when they got sick, so their employers say that they can only get what workman's comp will pay, which isn't everything, it seems. In other cases, their employers' insurance companies are fighting having the illnesses classified as work-related. Something like that, anyway. There's a second part to that clip.
