Re: Student's Protest Obama's Crappy School Lunch Mandates
The Finnish school lunch program is by no means problem-free. We get regular complaints in the press about school lunches that are not varied enough, not nutritious enough and/or not appetizing enough. Last year a strike messed up the school lunch system in Tampere pretty thoroughly, yet thankfully briefly: http://yle.fi/uutiset/no_lunch_for_2000 ... re/5456354
Overall the school lunches seem to work OK, though. Our own kids hate the food once or twice per month and report "really yummy" food 3-4 times per month, and they have seldom come home hungry. Some kids will not eat the school lunch out of "principle", just like some kids will not wear a hat or cap even though it's below freezing outside. There are some pretty stupid memes among teens, I am afraid, but according to the teachers in the two schools we know, those pupils who do not eat lunch at all or only very seldom are a fairly small minority.
BTW, that kind of salmon soup is usually really delicious - it's a traditional fisherman's recipe that it is hard to go wrong with. It's especially good accompanied with fresh rye bread.
If someone wants more detailed info, our National Board of Education, which is responsible for all public primary and secondary schools, provides a six-page introduction in English: http://www.oph.fi/download/47657_school ... inland.pdf
The US Embassy in Finland has a short report on USS Cole crew members experiencing, among other things, a Finnish school lunch: http://finland.usembassy.gov/ev_102109.html Photos here: http://finland.usembassy.gov/photogallery12.html Ambassador and Ms. Oreck have also familiarized themselves with the school lunches, but that report is quite a lot shorter: http://finland.usembassy.gov/ev_060210_c.html
YLE, our equivalent to BBC, had these short notices in English:

http://yle.fi/uutiset/heart_week_urges_ ... le/5830398
I also found some messages in English from the grassroots, like this blog post from a UK pupil who has made school lunches her project: http://neverseconds.blogspot.co.uk/2012 ... erent.html
There's also this post by the author of the book What’s for Lunch?: http://unpackingschoollunch.wordpress.c ... n-finland/
And here area a few more photos. IME they represent the reality in primary and secondary schools today. As you can see, the younger pupils (preschoolers and primary school pupils) sometimes are given plastic or metal mugs.

I can easily believe that. Many cities and counties here have openly stated that they plan the school lunch week so that Monday and Friday lunches have as much calories as possible - and some kids (few, but still) come to school on Monday clearly hungry.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:The best meal I got was the school lunch.

The sperm donor used to leave for work at 2:30 PM, right after he ate. The food would stay on the table until we got home at 3:30. That's the last meal we got until breakfast the next morning. And it was always cold. Plus it was hillbilly cooking, not exact nutritious. Breakfast was always cereal.Ronja wrote:I can easily believe that. They're probably Democrats. Democrats love to bitch. We'll know for sure when one of them shits on a cop car and throws a brick through a window.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:Any bets some Repulsive parents put the kids up to this?

Dude, you always get all bunged up anytime anyone asks you to back up anything you say. All I did was ask "why," and you got all indignant about it, as if it is axiomatic that they're privileged. Maybe they are, dude. But, it does depend on what you mean by "privileged," doesn't it? And, it's not unfair to ask as a followup to the claim "they are privileged" the simple question: how are they privileged? Your reaction is to fly off the handle and get your panties in a twist, rather than just say: Oh, that's easy - they're privileged because [insert explanation and/or examples of privilege here].Gawdzilla Sama wrote:You're not discussing, you're bullshitting. Most of the griping is because school lunches don't have fried chicken and fatty hamburgers andfries, giving 2000 calories per serving. With the fat epidemic being rampant among NA kids they should eat healthier food anyway, not junk food. In Canada the food is not free, kids have to pay for it. The meals are designed by dietitians, there is no deep fried stuff at all. Even the fries are baked.
In Finland when I went to high school we paid for the meals. Two kids would go to the cafeteria and bring back two steel buckets full of food, and the teacher doled out the meals to those who had paid. The menu was for six days, since we went to school on saturdays as well, then it started again. You broght your own bread. The meals were filling but not high class.

LOL, the Democrats will audit the kids' lunch bags and distribute any items deemed excessive to other kids. Then they'll pat themselves on the back and call themselves generous and compassionate.Ian wrote:Only if they also hold him down and cut off his hair.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:And if they steal the kid's lunch, they're GOP.Coito ergo sum wrote:They're probably Democrats. The hungry whine could be sorted with an all you can eat salad bar. Still hungry? Eat some lettuce fatso
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

I remember the number of times I had to convince my mom to give me a pack lunch instead of making me eat the horrors served at school (both in Canada and France)
