Ian wrote:CES - See, some of those you posted were good. I agree with the Nobel Prize criticism (as I believe Obama did too, it certainly surprised the heck out of him), and I think his comment about the debt ceiling in 2006 was little more than partisanship at the time. So, good call on those.

But it's an exagerration (and a whine) to claim that all Republicans get tagged as stupid except the evil genius Nixon. I wouldn't claim Bush 41 was stupid, for example. Nor would I say so about a great number of other Republicans. Eight years of Bush 43 really did the party's image a disservice, as I suppose the party did to itself by nominating him and re-electing him. The guy really wasn't too bright, and I have no hesitation at all saying that. And now there's the Tea Party... and the fact that the reddest states in the union also have the least-educated populations in the union... and the fact that people with graduate degrees or higher vote overwhelmingly Democratic... yeah, I'll never say that all Republicans are stupid, but goddammit there's a pretty big Kernel of Truth there.

You seem to naturally want a balance. "You guys get to say Bush and all Republican voters are stupid, so I get to say Obama is stupid, and you're the ones who get snippy about it." Well, this isn't a subject where there's an inherent balance. Nobody in his right mind would honestly think Obama is not intelligent.
It's not an exaggeration about the "Republicans are stupid" line. It's every single prominent candidate and President --

Bush, of course, and his dad. Reagan, definitely. Eisenhower. Ford. The Bushes. http://www.examiner.com/article/are-republicans-stupid The Democrats and the media constantly goes for the "he's stupid..." line with Republicans. Any gaffe is highlighted and exaggerated, and similar gaffes by Democrats are generally ignored.

I don't care about balance. I was the ONLY ONE posting jokes about Obama. Wasn't it enough balance that everyone else was posting the other way? I wasn't asking for equality. I just figured, everyone else is posting one sort of joke, I decided I would throw in some barbs going the other way. THEN it became a controversy. Suddenly we're having a discussion of appropriate humor, whether it's smart enough, whether it has enough of a "kernel of truth," etc.

This whole "he's intelligent" and "he's not" nonsense is just that - nonsense. GW Bush wasn't "stupid." He was a poor communicator. We had this debate years ago about Gore being so much "smarter" than Bush, but the reality was that Gore had very little in terms of a track record illustrating intelligence. He "sounded" smart sometimes, but it turns out, looking at his academics, he really didn't do well at all, and Bush outscored him. And, we have since found out that other than being a mouthpiece, his actual intelligence and education on the issue of climate science is pretty low.

And, of course, there was the old gem about the IQ's of the Presidents. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Presidential_IQ_hoax That was, of course, eaten up by Bush opponents and those that want to charge all Republicans with being stupid.
The British newspaper The Guardian, for example, quoted the report in its diary section of July 19, 2001 and used it to belittle Bush, although the paper published a retraction two days after the Associated Press drew attention to the error.[5][6] Other mainstream media news outlets to fall for the hoax included Bild (Germany), Pravda (Russia), and the Southland Times (New Zealand) as well as a few small U.S. newspapers. The hoax came back to life in March 2007 in Spanish-language media when the Press Agency EFE distributed a piece referring to it. Dozens of media (primarily in their online versions) reproduced EFE's text. Among newspapers publishing the hoax were El País (Spain's leading newspaper),[7] ABC and La Vanguardia.
I've been listening to that stuff since the 1970s.

This may very well be true, and the cartoon inaccurate, but keep in mind also that Republican and Democrat ideologies have experienced pole reversals throughout history, or at least have changed or shifted dramatically. A Republican of Lincoln's time and a Republican of today are entirely different animals. Even a Republican like Nixon bears little relation to our current crop.

It's this Bizarro world mentality in which the opposite of truth is offered up as truth, as if merely saying something makes it true, that is exasperating. Why is calling Bush or Palin dumb funny? "Holy Christ you're dumb," says the left.

Yes. What an amazingly witty comeback. Kinda makes you look...well, dumb. So thanks for proving OUR point.
I'm sorry your people are retards. That's just the way it is. It didn't used to be so. I always had a lot of respect for Republicans in the past. I never considered them dumb at all. Nixon made some mistakes but I never thought of him as dumb. William F Buckley Jr? Kind of an asshole, but fucking razor sharp. No one could ever accuse him of being dumb. But then Reagan was elected. And then pundits like Rush Limbaugh appeared. And that was the beginning of the end. It was difficult to take Republicans seriously after that. Bush Sr wasn't so bad. But then Bush Jr put the nails in the coffin of what little credibility Republicans had left, obliterating his father's legacy. Since then, it's just been (with occasional exceptions) a parade of loons and retards from the Republican side. They get dumber and dumber, crazier and crazier, and more and more out of touch with reality. It's a sad spectacle to witness.

Obama, once you remove all the allure and magical fascination turns out to be just another ignorant Negro who was handed everything through White pity.
He would never have gotten into Columbia, Harvard, or elected to the Senate on his "own" merits because he had none. By his own admittance he was too busy doing drugs to take education seriously. Chicago "community organizer" ? :hehe: The Blacks still just love shooting each other there, and the only thing keeping the murder rate down is that they are too stupid to hold a gun properly.

Any population of Blacks once it gets high enough simply destroys any civilization around them. They are unable to function in a society as a group without strict controls. That's why the Paris of the West, Detroit has become a decaying husk of a city; as the Blacks moved in everyone else who could moved out. The same story is being repeated in Chicago, D.C., Atlanta, and any other place where they are numerous enough to exercise their political power. Even more dangerous is that the decay of American industry may be traced to affirmative action practices that put unqualified Blacks into positions of authority they had no merit based right to hold.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I don't think congratulating yourselves for being "smart" is the same thing as demonstrating that you're smarter. It's not my experience that "the Left" is smarter and I've seen no good evidence for it, and the claims of Republicans being "stupid" are myths.

Generally, I find those that are very quick to call others "stupid" are not particularly bright themselves.

It doesn't matter who it is. From the Left, the strategy is always to smear, particularly on the issue of intelligence.

You really want me to list all of the "associations" that are on "your side?" Or, is this another of those instances where it's o.k. to saddle the Republicans with the idiots, but it wouldn't be fair to do so with the Democrats?

Just let me know -- we can go there, if you that's what you want. Think about who is on "your side" though...

"They aren't. You've just bought the talking point."

I don't give two shits about talking points. I'm basing my opinion on what I see with my own two eyes and what I hear with my own ears.

"... and the claims of Republicans being "stupid" are myths."

They're not stupid because they're Republicans. They're stupid because they're stupid. And since there are so many stupid Republicans around lately, I suppose there's a certain guilt by association. But I don't think it's a myth that Sarah Palin, for example, is an imbecile. Dude, she's fucking dumb. Bush Jr? Dumb. Smart but just not a good communicator? You can't be serious :hehe:
