Do Governments Represent Their People?

Guess what? I didn't vote for him either time. Because I didn't think he adequately reflected/represented who I am.Gawd wrote:Says the guy who worked for George Bush.Ian wrote:So you're responsible for everything the Canadian government does? So, if you're responsible for financing and supporting Harper and his guys (and I might as well hold you, personally, accountable), why don't you do something about those things you don't like? Why don't you refuse to pay taxes, or move somewhere else, or go live in a shack in the woods? 'Cause you're nice and comfortable where you are? You're the genius who said others here would've made nice obedient Germans in the 1930s and 40s, but you're as hypocritical if not worse than anyone. No balls to actually do anything except sit around and bitch about other people.

Re: Do Governments Represent Their People?
Hmmmm. We have a coalition Govt in the UK which no-one really expected and certainly didn't vote for. It's not representative of me as I didn't vote for either of the coalition partners and I oppose pretty much all of their policies.
My local MEP is gotch-eyed BNP jackass Nick Griffin. I didn't vote for him either and if he ever claimed to in any way represent me, I'd stick a garden rake up his backside.

Re: Do Governments Represent Their People?
And unfortunately, even when you do vote for an MP that gets in, they rarely, if ever represent you on anything but a tiny number of issues. I've been stuck in a position for my entire life as a voter where none of the available candidates' policies appeal to my political wishes. I've alternated between spoiling my ballot paper and choosing the candidate that I hate the least. Even when I have voted, I have been aware that my vote is as wasted as a spoilt paper because the candidate is expected to come in 3rd, 4th, 5th or worse. As much as I'd like to move to a country where the politics suits my views, there are many practical reasons why this would be impossible... and even then, I'd never find an exact match to my political utopia, as one doesn't exist.Clinton Huxley wrote:Hmmmm. So that puts me back to choosing between spoiling my ballot paper and voting for a loser.

As much as I'd like to have assassinated Tony Blair (and justifiably so for his war crimes), I'd not appreciate spending the rest of my life in prison watching a series of power-hungry Blair replacements do the same thing decade after decade.
Gawd, what's a guy to do in my position?

Took me about 20 minutes to realise Gawd is not interested in reason, he's a zealot and you guys are wasting your time. Let him dig his own hole long enough and I'm sure his Government will represent his childish arse straight into jail.

I sincerely would like to see the written proof of Hamas and other Palestinian Groups insisting on the 1967 borders. Link? Citation?Gawd wrote:The Palestinians groups (including Hamas) and the Arab League have insisted for decades on the 1967 borders which every nation on the planet except for Israel and America accept.Coito ergo sum wrote:Can you show me the borders of a Palestinian State, as set forth the Palestinian government? As far as I'm concerned, Israel's government can suck my shwetty arsehole. But while my current President has publicly endorsed the possibility of a Palestinian state (something that represents my views fairly well), your government is arguably more pro-Israeli than mine. Therefore, since Harper and his government are a reflection of who you are, you're pro-Israel. Care to change your avatar back to what it was for a month last summer?
Let me guess....

No, gummints don't represent the people, I'm pretty sure that the number of Americans who feel properly represented by the Obama administration, or by their reps and senators is a tiny minority.
I sure as heck am not being represented in any way, shape, or form, by my deputee in parliament, and even less by the szarkoszyt and his cronies.

The question you yourself asked is not whether governments maintain the state, even Western democratic nanny states, it was whether they represent their people.
a) the modern system of so called "representative democracy" is a sham and a fraud, as the elected officials do not represent the wishes and interests of those who nominally elected them, but solely those of the political party and machine that helped them get to that office.
b) What's worse, the minorities who voted against whoever is in office don't get any form of representation, as officials seldom listen to their constituents at all, and are not likely to act on, or give voice to the wishes and concerns of people whose agenda doesn't mach theirs.
