A question
I've got a question why do people insult you calling you an ideologue et al if you have a strong view one way or another. It seems in the age of apathy if you have strong and not wishy-washy views people dont take you seriously. This annoys me you seem to be not allowed to be passionate about politics you just get shouted down by the apathetic or get made out to be a loon or an ideologue.

You are quite right people are ignorant and want to remain that way and will fight anyone who tries otherwise.Gawdzilla wrote:"Labeling is the lazy man's substitute for understanding."redunderthebed wrote:I've got a question why do people insult you calling you an ideologue et al if you have a strong view one way or another. That depends how you argue.
If you don't have evidence or you do not qualify your statements, then it's just preaching.

The very problem that I have with society in general is this very attitude; I grind against it very often and is one of the causes of the depression I suffer. "Why waste time? There's nothing you can do about it!"
or
"You're too idealistic, just get on with life!"
or, the one that really gets me wound up,
"You think too much!"
Most of the time I'd like to reply to such retorts with a swift punch up the chuffer...luckily for them, and I, I am not of such a disposition.
Usually I waste my breath trying to incite a rigorous debate, to which I am left wanting...luckily, there are places such as these that allow a more intelligent and constructive arena.
I admit that some of my deep thoughts are mostly theorectical and suppositious, but many of them are to do with real and important issues that affect us all. They say that religion and politics are the very subjects that should be avoided...I say that they are the very subjects that should be discussed, because they are the subjects that cause the most angst and disruption in all our lives.
In respect of those theoretical arguments, we have to learn to accept that not everyone has the capacity to think beyond the little world in which they live; they don't want to try and understand the bigger picture and are content to shuffle along with all the other sheep of this world. Conversely, there are those that are so indoctrinated in their beliefs that they refuse to even consider the counter-argument, and the 'debate' collapses into a playground mentality of bloody-mindedness - a curt nod toward religion here.
With those ideas about politics (especially), the majority (it seems) have been 'brainwashed' into thinking that change is impossible - even downright too scary to contemplate, and I further suggest that they have been 'trapped' into a certain lifestyle of idealism that prevents them from rising up against the status quo.
If we take a typical family as an example:
Commercialism and materialism has coerced that family (primarily the parents) into seeking a lifestyle that has been depicted on TV, film, and advertisement; that idyllic life of happy smiley people with all the mod-cons, the two-week holiday abroad, the shiny new car(s), the perfectly manicured lawn outside their perfectly maintained house. They seek that lifestyle blindly and voraciously at a cost they seem unable (or unwilling) to acknowledge, and succumb to the machine that (often) allows them to realise that dream existence - mortages, loans, credit cards. I doubt that many people (of this ilk) consider whether they can afford the bottom-line payment, but rather the weekly commitment. The result, in my opinion, is that they cannot possibly 'stand up for themselves' for fear of losing their status both as an employee and the social dictate.
The bigger picture reveals that the children of that family become indoctrinated into following the same pattern, and the cycle becomes self-perpetuating.
As someone who does question the way of things, I am generally seen as an outcast of society - how dare I be so bold as to voice my objections! I have lost employment because I stand up for myself in my indignation. Furthermore, I become agitated and despondent when the only response I get is along the lines of "well, if you don't like it there are plenty of people willing to fill your position..." - to which I usually reply, "well, you better give 'em a call then!"...hence losing jobs lmaooo
I can be quite acerbic and flippant to such people...they don't deserve my effort!
Exactly!born-again-atheist wrote:If you don't have evidence or you do not qualify your statements, then it's just preaching.

Re: A question
You can throw that straight back into their faces if you are that way inclined, for nobody lives without some ideology or or another.Mr Bouquet wrote:I've got a question why do people insult you calling you an ideologue...
Ideology:
1. The body of ideas reflecting the social needs and aspirations of an individual, group, class, or culture.
2. A set of doctrines or beliefs that form the basis of a political, economic, or other system.
Hence, no matter whether one is a democrat, humanitarian, a libertarian, a social democrat, a humanist, a monarchist, creationist, communist, anarchist, nihilist, new ageist, or whatever else, and no matter if one has a strong view or not, there is an underlying ideology to the views one upholds and defends. In short, do not feel insulted. Everybody is an ideologue. Some people just express their ideologies more forcefully - and perhaps more clearly and explicitly - than others.
