A pretty decent film adaptation of one of Harlan's best stories - but the ending lets it down. Where Harlan implies the tale's twist beautifully, the film hits you in the face with a cheesy pun. I still like it though.tattuchu wrote:eleventy-seven: A Boy and His Dog
Kind of cheesy and amateurish, but not without charm. Held up by the strength of the story and dialogue, which was kept fairly faithful to Harlan Ellison's original story upon which the film is based. Reading some reviews, it seems people believe this to be a very strange, peculiar, or outrageous story and film. It doesn't seem strange at all to me. I guess I'm used to this sort of thing. But it was fun. Notable for a young Don Johnson (of Miami Vice fame) in the lead role, although 1) he was too old to play this character as written in Ellison's story and 2) the dog was a better actor in this film than he was.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

I don't remember how Ellison ended it in his original story. I have the graphic novel version, Vic and Blood, drawn by Richard Corben. I'll have to re-read it and compare the two adaptations.Xamonas Chegwé wrote: A pretty decent film adaptation of one of Harlan's best stories - but the ending lets it down. People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

shfifty-five: Elf. I didn't used to like Will Farrell, but have warmed up to him over the years. I also like John Favreau's films and was curious to see how he went from early films like Swingers and Made to big budget action films like
Iron Man, so was interested to see a mid period piece. So I was inclined to like this film, predisposed to like it. But it fell kind of flat to me. It just wasn't funny at all. In fact it was almost painful to watch. Nevertheless, I cried like a baby at the end

Re: The 150 movie challenge 2011 - the sequel
I think the script and the dialogue could have been a lot better. I could see how it was trying to be funny. But it just wasn't. Still, it had its moments. And the actors were all very good, despite what they were given to work with. It was a likable enough film, not unpleasant. I just thought it could have, and should have, been much better. As it was, it was just kinda meh.rachelbean wrote:you are dead to metattuchu wrote:shfifty-five: Elf. I didn't used to like Will Farrell, but have warmed up to him over the years. Re: The 150 movie challenge 2011 - the sequel
That was definitely one of the better scenes.
thirty-three and a third: Aaaah Zombies!
I like zombie films. I like comedy films. I like horror/comedy films. So I was predisposed to like this, especially after reading all the positive reviews on amazon. I knew going in that it was no Shaun of the Dead. But I was under the impression that it was going to be a cute clever little low budget flick. Unfortunately, I found it to be astonishingly bad. Not tongue-in-cheek knowingly wink-wink bad. Just bad. Not so-bad-it's-good bad. Just bad. The script and the dialogue are awful, and the acting is so amateurish and godawful it's painful to watch. I couldn't even make it through the whole film, and I never not watch a film through to the end. I took it out of my DVD player and threw it in the trash.
Don't get the wrong idea. If someone dislikes something so much, that in itself might pique your interest. You might think it would be worth a watch, just out of curiosity. Don't waste your time, and don't waste your money. Let me reiterate. This is not a so-bad-it's good sort of film. It's just bad.

number: The Whole Nine Yards. Nothing all that substantial here, but cute and sweet and reasonably amusing. The cast seems like they had a really good time making the film, and entertaining to watch as a result.
