African famines

Post by Lozzer » Mon Jul 25, 2011 12:20 pm

Is the Somalian famine a western responsibility, and if not, why should our governments provide millions in aid out of the public's purse? Surely charities and humanitarian NGOs should accept the bulk of relief efforts and funding, and not our respective governments? We aren't the world's police, and we certainly shouldn't be the world's mother. I'm getting tired of hearing how we have to support starving Africans again, as they resort to feeding on the wealthy tit of western prosperity; and all because their population is out of control, and the balance of self-sustainability tipped. We thrown billions into improving and protecting the lives of these people, and yet it continues to be a philanthropic black hole. Everything we throw in disappears, and with no ostensible benefit. If African nations wish to be sovereign, surely they should accept fucking responsibility for their own people? They have civil infrastructure to provide welfare and aid, so why don't they? and if they don't, it's their own fault for not channelling money into the right places. I'm fed up of some do-gooder organisation complaining that our governments have been reluctant, late or negligent of the famine; when we shouldn't feel obliged to give a shit. It's not as if people cannot donate money if they want to.

Eurgh, fuck them. Death is nature's way of addressing untenable populations.

Yeah, decades, if not centuries ago.

Not decades ago NOW.... all the time .There are allegedly as many AKs in africa as people . You want perfect government from countries wrecked by extreme poverty when the developed world has been selling them guns and helicopters when the only interest we have had is which leaders will give our western countries the oil or mineral rights ?

The EU is more of a black hole for money than third world aid.
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Code: Select all

// Replaces with spaces the braces in cases where braces in places cause stasis
   $str = str_replace(array("\{","\}")," ",$str);

Do some research before you call bullshit. I think you will find I'm right

Rather we lost money to the EU and careless bureaucracy than saving people's lives :fall:

UK foreign aid budget = £7.8 billion
UK EU 'budget' is harder to work out as it is calculated over a rolling 7 year period, however for the period 2007 - 13 the UK contributes an estimated 103 billion Euros (1.1 to the £ currently)
It isn't quite as straightforward as dividing that figure by 7 because of other factors (inflation, rebates and so on..the rebate is important as we get 1/3 back), but roughly that makes the annual EU contribution 14.7 billion a year.

Birth control should be made mandatory before we help these African countries anymore. Over population is the problem, not famine. Famine is the natural way to counteract overpopulation.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Natural? What's natural? People use that term to explain things over which we often have control these days. The UK population is approaching 70 million as opposed to 8 million in 1800 and 30 million in 1900.

We haven't 'naturally' had our population controlled by famine.

The vast majority of famines and human disasters in this day and age are hugely influenced by human beings and as such to a great extent avoidable if the will was there.
