Mexico: 500 migrants found in trucks in Chiapas

More than 500 illegal migrants have been discovered crammed into the trailers of two trucks heading from Mexico towards the US.

The 513 migrants, from Latin America and Asia, were were found travelling in "inhumane" conditions, police said.

Four people accused of smuggling the migrants were arrested, officials said.

The discovery, made in Mexico's southern Chiapas state, is one of the biggest cases of suspected human trafficking, police say.

The migrants were discovered using X-ray equipment at a checkpoint, about to be smuggled illegally into the US, police said.

That looks like a 20 foot standard, which has a volume of 1,172 ft3. There are also 40 foot standards with an internal volume of 2,390 ft3. Must be using a 40, in a 20 that would give each person less than 5 cubic feet of space which is 5 x 1 x 1 foot or smaller than a coffin. Even small Mexicans would have a problem. So I'm guessing they used a 40, where each would have 9.56 cubic feet.

Now, some are probably kids so that makes up for the occasional big one, but in any case it''s a sardine can.

I don't see that that works. How do you use the top level? Do they stand on each others' shoulders. And how do they pee and pooh?
Unless they put a couple of floors in it, I can't see how they could take that number.

They've been using this British invention for sometime. It can hold way more than 500 in complete comfort, with air conditioning.
