Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Sea burial of Osama bin Laden breaks sharia law, say Muslim scholars

Osama bin Laden's burial at sea was quickly criticised by Muslim scholars who claimed it had breached sharia law and warned that it may provoke calls for revenge attacks against US targets.
Like killing him isn't. As if Islamic radicals need any excuse to call for revenge attacks. Burying him at sea is a brilliant solution because it denies his followers a grave to turn into a holy shrine to Islamic terrorism. Fucking brilliant. I do hope they pissed on him, farted in his beard, and smeared him with pig fat first though.

Assorted, semi-random thoughts on this as expunged from my brain in an antihistamine-induced haze:

- On one level I'm glad they got him, but I just can't get too excited about it. Osama's death changes nothing. In a sense, he already won by being the catalyst that handed all the political power in the country over to the paranoid war-mongerers.

- Apparently lots of people are convinced there are a bunch of al Qaeda sleeper cells just waiting to launch new attacks on the news of Bin Laden's death. People, it's Al Qaeda: if they were in a position to launch effective attacks, they would already have done so.

- Haven't skimmed the political sites yet today, but I predict Fox will be crowing about George Bush's victory against Osama, or complaining that Obama took too long. Oh, and their news tickers will indiscriminately swap the names 'Osama' and 'Obama'.

Now it's back to the Nyquil bottle for me.

The "moronic flag wavers" that were outside the White House gates were mostly of a particular age group. This is the age group that were in middle school during 9/11, and therefore would have been the group most traumatized by 9/11. One of them even pointed this out to reporters after my lover and I had figured it out. These people are responding to a personal event, seeing bookmarks that define a particular chapter.

You can hold them in contempt and not understand them, and you probably will. However, these people are just now having to deal with their own finances in a seriously depressed economy, and they're just now going to college. They are going to do things over the next 20 years. At best, it might turn out to be a complete overturn of the old categories: sociopathic, greedy right-wingers and lickspittle, whiny left-wingerss. They're also kind of used to being ignored.

It should be fun to watch.
Thought provoking observation, epepke.

1. 10 years, 2 wars, 919,967 deaths, & $1,188,263,000,000 later, we managed to kill one person. I hope it was worth it.
2. How many more Osama's have been created in last 10 years?
3. I don't see much worth celebrating at all in this whole mess and likely these celebrations just encourage further hatred, intolerance, and one-upmanship.
4. Can the troops be brought home now?
On your thought number 3, I'm also wondering what intelligence the US government has on this. After 9/11, the US government revealed they had been aware of al qaeda and osama for some time, yet the first most people knew of him was after 9/11. In pres Obama's address about osama's death, he didn't try to gloss over the fact that the "war on terror" (I hate that emotive phrase and wish it had never been coined) is still on. So yeah, what do they know and what are their strategies. Rhetorical questions, of course ... these are not questions I'd ever expect a response to. ;)

Indeed. That didn't occur to me at all. In my time it was the Cuban Missile Crisis and the threat of nuclear war that traumatized me.

And Obama's no idiot. Just look at all those college age students celebrating today with rallies at college campuses all over the country...this will garner him huge support for the next election.

For my generation, the defining moment and myth was the 1969 moon landing. I got lucky, because that was pretty sweet, a lot better than the Cuban Missile Crisis or 9/11 or the destruction of the Challenger. So we grew up to make computers happen so that we could play Lunar Lander and Space War.

Come to think of it, notice how there aren't many space games any more. They're all about guys with guns, running around, getting the Bad Guy. Cultural myths.

No, and I suspect that the demonstrations outside the White House gate were at least partly instigated. It's not easy to find flags that big at 11 PM, not even in Washington.
