Durro, For the record (and that's a different record than the one that rEv wants to set straight), I always thought that you were a pretty good guy on RDF and ratskep (in the brief time I was there). If you'll remember, I enjoyed reading the parts of your book I read about your time in the Middle East, and I even suggested the name of a publisher in San Franciso who might be interested in your book.

I have been informed by a number of friends who are ratskep members about who some of the mods were who were quick to perma-ban me, and your name is not on that list. If you wish to take my posts in this thread personally, you can do that, but, the truth of the matter is that I don't know if you had any involvement with what transpired, and I have no personal animosity toward you. If other individuals who are members of both rationalia and ratskep wish to take my posts on this thread personally, let them speak up. Or, has somebody appointed you to be the defender of those rationalia/ratskep members who, for real or imaginary reasons, have been offended?

In the meantime, I continue to regard the actions of those in power at ratskep who have been quick to give some of us the hook as demonstrations of the weak, irrational, rigid, thin-skinned mentality that exists on that forum. You have said that some of what I have written amounts to unfounded and unfair character assassinations. Actually, I think my comments, and the comments of Kiki and others, are quite well founded and very fair.

By the way, have you made any progress toward publishing your book?

maiforpeace, I have no axes to grind with you, and I have no intention of getting into any conflict with you. However, I am curious why you choose to single me out, of all those who have posted on this thread, for your comments.

Actually, I do think that I have offered something quite constructive when I suggested that those at ratskep cop to their irrational actions and welcome those folks back that they were so quick to get rid of. That truly would be a constructive and compassionate thing to do, and I seriously doubt they will do it. So it goes...

The Feral community became the TAF community which became the Ratz community. There is an established 'side' here, with a particular view point and philosophy which has evolved over time.
Anyone trying to equate the two as part of some giant hug-fest is spouting nonsense.
Belonging to one site doesn't close you off from the other (at least, not yet), but the atmosphere and philosophies of the two are very different.

It's also stupid. How do you judge the quality of this thread? I judge it as a bunch of vain monologuing from just about everyone involved (and lately that includes myself).

I can't recall any forum post that wasn't vain monologuing. I think it's more preposterous to believe that a forum post on any subject is anything but vanity. You're putting your words in a public venue under the presumption that they're interesting enough for people to read.

No I wouldn't. Why do you say things like you know me? I never pm anyone to complain, nor have I (but once, and that was cause they reported me and I got annoyed) never report anyone.

But I started getting really pissed when people were reporting me left and right. I couldn't say anything. They were pressing those report buttons like hot cakes. But when those same people insulted me, they felt they were above it all. When I responded to their insult they reported me. So they can insult me but when I retaliate then it's abuse? WTF!!! I still didn't report cause I think it's childish. But it got so damn annoying it was ridiculous that it got me mad.

Just go through and collect all the formal and informal warnings against various personalities on the forum. You'll find that the ratio of formal warnings to informal warnings is very low for the favored posters, much lower than for the posters the moderators generally dislike.

Again, if everyone got formal warnings when they broke the rules, that would be fine with me. When it's only people with certain subsets of views, that's a problem. I don't agree with kiki on the mosque, for example, but she did add things to the discussion, in particular citing the French experience, that provided a perspective I hadn't thought of and that I learned from. When minority views like that are effectively quashed, the forum is no longer a place where rational skeptics like me can learn, and it loses its value to us.

It's all about context. You cannot legitimately compare a post at one point in time in one thread with another post at another point in time in another thread. The staff look very closely at the context of a post when making a judgement as to the severity of an FUA breach.

Some of the issues we look at include:
* has the member previously been advised by staff with regard to the FUA? What was the advice for? How much previous advice has the member had?
* was any recent staff advice ignored (regardless of whether it was directed specifically towards that member or not)?
* what was the overall tone of the thread leading up to that post? How did that post fit into the context of the discussion?

It also depends on if the Mods see it.
The best way for that to happen is to report. If you're not into reporting (as I'm not) that may mean posts you think should get warnings or the like (and maybe they should) won't, because the Mods didn't see/notice.

It would be permissable here. Hell, you could come on to this forum and bitch about this forum, we do it all the time. The only things not allowed are targeted attacks at individual members and illegal content, really.


Secondly, it's a fact of the internets. Favoured members of any internet board are going to be treated more fairly by the mods, and vice versa more favoured mods are more likely to be excused for their shit by the members.
