Conservatives have a lower IQ

Post by nellikin » Mon Mar 01, 2010 11:34 pm

A friend just mailed me this link - from A top German weekly mag - about how intelligence is linked with being more open-minded to change, whereas conservatives and religious people have lower IQs. Brilliant!

I think the original research was largely discredited however the conclusion is true.

The average (read: typical, man-in-the-street) conservative's IQ has not been demonstrated to be significantly different to the average liberal's. However as a strictly mathematical worldwide average, the conservative IQ is lower simply because Sarah Palin is included in their numbers

In related news, scientists have found a correlation between conservatism and, ahem, staying power.
these are things we think we know
these are feelings we might even share
these are thoughts we hide from ourselves
these are secrets we cannot lay bare.

CNN couched it a little differently in their article, but it was essentially the same assertion:

Think that applies to politicans or voters or both?

I personally think most elected politicans regardless of ideology are generally far more intelligent than their electorate through that doesnt say anything about their ethic etc

I would be very careful using this type of research as political tool.

Basing my opinions of conservatives upon many acquaintances in different countries tells me there is really no difference. Of course, keeping the US out of this equation as their political "parties" and ideologies are totally skewed from the rest of the world.

One of my friends back home was a libertarian, a prominent member and later elected representative from the Norwegian Progress Party and he ran several businesses. Smart but somewhat odd is probably the best description I can give of him. Lived on a house boat for tax reasons, etc. We just disagreed on politics but I would never call him stupid. Another friend went on to become one of the leaders of Norway's conservative party, The Right, a brilliant academic mind, just politically delusional ;-)

Æ e i A æ å!
(Edit: Yes, the above is a sentence!)

One of my friends is very recognizable thanks to an eye-patch he is wearing and how he closely resembles a pirate in look or at least used to while I still lived in the country.

Edit2: The Norwegian Wikipedia have a page about him including a picture: Henning Holstad

PZ dismisses the results too quickly. Kanazawa may indeed be an idiot when it comes to evolutionary psychology, but the statistics should be verifiable/debunked by anyone with enough conviction.
