Boring England match.

Looking forward to Burnley hosting Villa at the Turf.
Prediction is hard but I suspect:
Burnley 1 - 0 Aston Villa.

A tad optimistic perhaps but the Turf has been a fortress so far this season.

At least the rugby team done reasonably well. Great bit of play on the last try.
Algeria have just beaten Egypt 1-0 in a play-off in Sudan.

Greece are 1-0 up away to the Ukraine, and also on aggregate. About 20 minutes to go, and the Ukrainians need two goals.

If I get bored/scared with France - Ireland, I can always watch Slovenia - Russia instead - Russia lead 2-1 from the first leg.

And Uruguay - Costa Rica is also on the box later, but with Uruguay 1-0 up from the away leg, I don't see much chance of Costa Rica recovering ... just like ...

Just think: New Zealand are going to the World Cup, and we probably aren't.

Oh I don't believe this ... Anelka has scored for France after Henry handled the ball twice ... :banghead:

Sorry, Gallas it was that scored. But that handball ... that was actually worse than Maradona against England in 1986. Much worse. :nono:

Let's see what Messrs Platini and Blatter have to say about using TV replays now. :lay:

Oh, and the French keeper was their best player in each game, and that was the best Ireland have played for about 7 years.

The circle turns more quickly than that - the Euro 2012 qualifiers will start in about 9 months. :levi:

The Irish team played brilliantly tonight. Their attitude and focus were superb, but they really expressed themselves as well on the ball, which Trappattoni has rarely allowed them to do. At their best, the Irish tend to play a fundamentally way to England. In some ways, their style of game is closer to the English club game than that of the English national team is, which is curious. I think England tend to be a bit sterile and clunky, and have been for years. I don't think they play to anywhere their full potential, which is why (as usual) I don't think they'll win the World Cup. Mind you, the weather will suit them for once. :plot:

Uruguay v. Costa Rica has just started. The very last qualifying game ...

Predictably, the official FIFA summary airbrushes all mention of the handball, but makes a point of mentioning that the referee correctly denied France a penalty after Anelka dived (but not that the referee failed to book him):

It has ever been thus. George Orwell would have been proud. :levi:

Assistant manager Marco Tardelli has just been interviewed on Irish TV. Now there was a man who knew how to celebrate a goal ... :coffee:

EDIT: Don't even talk to me about the FIFA decision to change the rules on the play-off draw mid-stream to suit the big countries.

Brown trousers time in the Centenario in Montevideo. Uruguay took the lead on the night, and therefore went 2-0 up on aggregate. But Costa Rica got a goal straight back. If they get another in the last 15 minutes, they win on away goals.
