Some pals of mine actually worked witth Kate Bush - she had some sort of photo shoot for promoting that recent-ish comeback after however many years silence so Rachel (who is paid to do this sort of stuff) took her out clothes shopping. Apparently she's great company and very funny but was somewhat bitter about the reception which her previous album had garnered (think it was The Sensual World)...

When she re-recorded it in the mid-1980's, her voice wasn't nearly as high. Thankfully no-one seems to play that version anymore.

I like Kate Bush her later work more than that early high pitched singing.

Depends on the years really, but if it was 2005-ish that last album being referred to was probably The Red Shoes, which is the only album of her career to receive a mixed reception. Personally I think about half of it is up there with her best, but it contains some songs which aren't great, and one which is genuinely just fucking awful. I'm aware she had quite serious misgivings about it, but really she was mad to put that on the album.

But it's all for the best I suppose as the 12 year virtual silence that followed it led to her best work by a mile.

EDIT: also, for what it matters, which, yes, is very little I know, (also prepare for a very clumsy explanation) but the vocals on Wuthering Heights are high for narrative purposes, in that she's playing a ghost, and a fairly intense and vile character, so naturally her voice was going to be fairly ethereal. That's a terrible explanation I know but hopefully you can see what it is I'm getting at.

Anyway, singing in that register is fairly a-typical of her work, even very early on.

Well "Army dreamers" is also pretty high.

I love Kate. Personally, I think that it is a great loss to the world that she abandoned all touring after a roadie died during the early 80's - can't be arsed to wiki the details but they're there - she is right at the top of my list of artists I will probably never see live but would love to.

I think that her latest album - Aerial - was possibly the best of her career (although I adore The Dreaming about the same.) Her voice has much more maturity and every song gives up more of itself on repeat listenings.

Some of the studio techniques that she used once she had built her own studio were ahead of her time too. She employed tricks on Hounds of Love that sound a little dated now but only because they were ripped off by every other artist at the time!
