Meanwhile in California

--people can't read
California, shockingly, has the lowest literacy rate of any state
The state has the most diverse population in the country, more than 200 languages are spoken here. California also has the biggest wealth chasm.

And programs to teach English to children whose parents speak another language at home have shown little success. Only 10 percent of students in English acquisition programs display grade-level proficiency. That’s a significant problem in a state with 1 million English learners among a student population of about 6 million.

“There’s only so much schools can do,” said Gao.

That’s because academic success depends on a lot of things that schools don’t control. When you look at the things that predict success, some 70 percent have nothing to do with schools.

It's all the illegal immigrants that Shamala bought into the state to vote.

Climate change - already way above sustainable. Call any place paradise, then wave it goodbye. Big earthquake overdue. Human die-off there abouts not long after. Tech companies coming to the rescue rather than hurrying outa state, unlikely to be playing the hero on the day of doom. Wise to leave and only show fools the way to dusty sorrow that's sure to come at the end. Elon is the sign, smart money should upsticks and leave before L.A. of the 1980s returns with drug cartels and gnu fights to cheer up a region in long term decline.

He brings up a lot of interesting points, a bit scattered but ultimately understandable.

My guess is the numbers as presented don’t say a whole lot. (A good story here may be the response to things like this and how it contributes to creating a marketplace of bad ideas —your next solutions)

The kids might not be able to read, but at least they'll all have a deep understanding of critical race theory.

The beloved banana slug becomes California’s official state slug
You’ve probably beheld a bright yellow banana slug on a hike in the Santa Cruz Mountains or perhaps even in your own backyard. But now, the beautiful banana slug is officially the California state slug.

In a series of bills signed into law on Sept. 27, the banana slug, Dungeness crab and black abalone join a plethora of other wildlife in representing California. This recognition brings attention to these creatures’ roles in the ecosystem and in the lives of the people in Santa Cruz and across the state. “It’s a really good way to focus on things that are unique and beautiful for California,” says Assemblymember Gail Pellerin for the 28th Assembly District, who proposed the banana slug bill.

If it looks like a banana, does it also taste like one?
