The vaccines protect you from serious illness, but not necessarily asymptomatic infection, which is why we should still wear masks until it's better known. The idea of wearing the mask after vaccination is to protect others around you, who may be unvaccinated.
I've been rewearing N95 masks for years when sanding and fumes, without an issue. Not the same masks for years, but use them until they break. I used to launder them, but now I steam them since it maintains their integrity better. I put one of the thin tissue masks underneath them now, both for more protection (if that works), and because it helps keep the N95 from getting damp from my breath. Therefore I don't have to steam the n95's as often. I had the n95's from before the pandemic. I can throw away the cheap thin ones after use ane rewear the n95. I can't find any new ones now except for online at exorbitant prices for something I'm not sure is even what it says to be. There are a ton of counterfeits on the market.
I'm with you on all of that, though I don't wear my current assortment of N95 masks for COVID since they all have valves, defeating one of the purposes of wearing a mask in public, which is protecting other members of the public. I've been hand-washing my N95s for a long time. At this point I'm going to get some proper elastic from a sewing shop and replace broken rubber bands on them because as you say, they're not available at reasonable prices from reliable sources.
The n95's with valves will protect you some, and you could wear a cheap mask under them to protect other people at the same time. I've been repairing mine too, using a glue gun to reattach the nose clips. I used a bundle of bread ties on one that I lost the nose clip to. I bought a roll of elastic in the craft section at a dept store that looks just like the mask elastics, but I haven't tried it yet.
I steam the masks after I read that cleaning with soap can reduce the efficacy of the mask by up to 50%. I noticed that in practice when I wore a laundered one to spray paint something and the fumes were still bad.

It's your inner Neanderthal!
A previous study1 identified two genomic regions that are associated with severe COVID-19: one region on chromosome 3, which contains six genes, and one region on chromosome 9 that determines ABO blood groups. Recently, a dataset was released by the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative in which the region on chromosome 3 is the only region that is significantly associated with severe COVID-19 at the genome-wide level (Fig. 1a). The risk variant in this region confers an odds ratio for requiring hospitalization of 1.6 (95% confidence interval, 1.42–1.79) (Extended Data Fig. 1)...

We find that all risk haplotypes associated with severe COVID-19 form a clade with the three high-coverage Neanderthal genomes. Within this clade, they are most closely related to the Vindija 33.19 Neanderthal.

The Neanderthal core haplotype occurs in south Asia at an allele frequency of 30%, in Europe at an allele frequency of 8%, among admixed Americans with an allele frequency of 4% and at lower allele frequencies in east Asia23 (Fig. 3).

It is currently not known what feature in the Neanderthal-derived region confers risk for severe COVID-19 and whether the effects of any such feature are specific to SARS-CoV-2, to other coronaviruses or to other pathogens. Once the functional feature is elucidated, it may be possible to speculate about the susceptibility of Neanderthals to relevant pathogens. However, with respect to the current pandemic, it is clear that gene flow from Neanderthals has tragic consequences.

Bloody Neanderthals. What did they ever do for us?

How lifestyle changes within the COVID-19 global pandemic have affected the pattern and symptoms of the menstrual cycle

Abstract

Background: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant changes to homes, working life and stress. The purpose of this research was to investigate the implications that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the menstrual cycle and any contributing factors to these changes.

Methods: A questionnaire was completed by 749 participants, whom ranged from ‘physically active’ to elite, in their training status. The questionnaire captured detail on menstrual cycle symptoms and characteristics prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period, as well as lifestyle, stress, exercise and nutrition. Descriptive statistics and frequency distribution were reported and decision tree analysis performed. Statistical significance was assumed at p<0.05.

Results Fifty-two point six percent of females experienced a change in their menstrual cycle during the lockdown period.

Psychosocial symptoms had changed in over half of all participants. Participants who reported increased stress/worry in family and personal health were significantly associated with changes in menstrual symptoms. Similarly, job security stress was associated with increases in bleeding time (p<0.05).

Conclusions: It is important that females and practitioners become aware of the implications of stressful environments and the possible long-term implications on fertility, particularly given the uncertainty around a second wave of the global pandemic.

Many of them have pretty spectacular midlife crises. This is a flattering depiction of one.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus continues to decline in Nebraska, and more than 19% of the state’s population has now been vaccinated against the virus.

The state said Thursday that 107 people were hospitalized with the virus, which is the lowest level since last July. That number has fallen steadily since peaking at 987 in November. Health officials said nearly 107,000 doses of the vaccines were administered in the state last week.
