The Coronavirus Thread
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
If a virus could learn the trick of transmitting without a mask, what sort of gain of function research could yield that new ability?
I still think it's best to avoid mask-wearing every possible time.

Rationalia relies on voluntary donations. There is no obligation of course, but if you value this place and want to see it continue please consider making a small donation towards the forum's running costs.
Details on how to do that can be found here.

Doesn't matter. The way 'gain of function' research works, the researchers don't have to know how a trick is learned, they just note that the trick has been learned.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 3:24 pmAerosol infection through the mucus membrane of the eyeball?Cunt wrote:If a virus could learn the trick of transmitting without a mask, what sort of gain of function research could yield that new ability?
They usually give it a nudge, by mixing types of animal cells, or such, in a lab setting.
What concerns me, is that it is a giant lab experiment, where the tricks the virus learns won't be simply noted. They'll spread.
If it learns your eyeball trick, for example, then learns to drift on a breeze safely for a few hours, well, things would be different in a hurry.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
And what does this washing do? If you did not get infected, there is nothing you can catch from the mask the next day. They don't live or multiply on masks. If you blew snot into it, once a week should keep it sanitary.

Do you also only charge your underwear once a week?
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Tero's underwear is an ongoing gain-of-function research site. As are everyone's.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Underwear is in good shape. Not like the bachelor underwear that is worn to the end. According to Dave Barry "guys" do not throw out underwear as long as there is one underwear molecule left.
My mask, even though somewhat like underwear, is never washed as it is made of Chinese face mask molecules that easily disintegrate with water. I do have to wear a cloth mask over one model, as it does not qualify according to Trader Joe strict rules, even though surgical face masks falling off the nose do. It's a small grocery store. I buy coffee there. The toucan one or the Joe one:
Sometimes the fair trade one if I feel rich. It is three dollars more

Not a single case of the flu has been detected in England so far in 2021 according to public health officials, despite thousands of swabs being tested each week.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Comparing the coronavirus to the flu is understandable, but it's probably more sensible/practical/informative to compare it to something like measles.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Well it's much like the Spanish flu. 20 000 died of it Finland, compared to 700 for this one, and with a couple of million people more. My grandmother was 13 when Spanish flu hit Finland. Never asked her about it.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Indeed, it's predominantly a respiratory illness. But its infectiousness and lethality put it closer to measles in terms of the public health response.
