We'll need that tar sands for asphalt later. When we stop burning gasoline. The still bottoms now give the tar.

Keystone Pipeline (merged)
He could do that, have it approved and built, and still Alberta would blame him when the industry refuses to buy shitty Alberta tar sands crude.Woodbutcher wrote:I saw him in the news. Surely in a Capitalist System, privately-owned companies pay for these things and charge willing customers for the service they offer?

Re: Keystone Pipeline (merged)
The tar sands oil is of low value. It does not make diesel fuel for trucks. It can only be used for the biggest diesels such as ocean going ships.
Shipping tar sands by rail is a messy process. It has to be diluted with other hydrocarbon fuel, which makes it flammable.
Gas needs: bitumen needs natural gas (which we could burn for heat, it's a good source) but some solutions will develop:
(Wiki, under Athabasca oil sands)
According to the National Energy Board, it requires about 1,200 cubic feet (34 m3) of natural gas to produce one barrel of bitumen from in situ projects and about 700 cubic feet (20 m3) for integrated projects.[105] Since a barrel of oil equivalent is about 6,000 cubic feet (170 m3) of gas, this represents a large gain in energy. That being the case, it is likely that Alberta regulators will reduce exports of natural gas to the United States in order to provide fuel to the oil sands plants. As gas reserves are exhausted, however, oil upgraders will probably turn to bitumen gasification to generate their own fuel. In much the same way as bitumen can be converted into synthetic crude oil, it can also be converted into synthetic natural gas.
(End)
Much of this will develop in Canada. It really does not pay to ship unrefined crap to the US. The land they are "destroying" up there is boreal forest and bog.

"A bit of a mess" is an interesting way to put it.

Good idea. It will sink to the bottom, and then the new monkeys a little later will find it and it will have turned to oil. Millions of years after we go extinct.
