Of course the parts of Obamacare were planned to work together, to bring the cost to the taxpayer down. But still, the legsl thinking they have is weak. It's like saying an amendment to the constitution repeals the entire constitution.

And then, of course, there was the famous attempt to pack the court in 1937. Franklin Roosevelt, irritated that a conservative court kept striking down legislation aimed at reviving the economy during the Great Depression, proposed adding a slew of new justices under the guise of court reform. The effort technically failed — Congress never passed the legislation — though the court became more amenable to New Deal legislation in the sessions that followed.

In times of yore, perhaps only 30 years ago, political parties would be reluctant to enact laws or set constitutional precedents that might play into the hands of their political opponents. They wouldn't, for example, give ministers or appointed functionaries unlimited spending powers for example for fear of what the next administration might do with that kind of power. Nowadays, the Right seem not only sure that they're entitled to power, but absolutely certain that they'll always have their hand on the tiller. I suppose that something like the Repugs claiming automatic legitimacy for fast-tracking a unabashedly partisan nominee to the supreme court will leave any subsequent Democrat house with the legitimacy to do the same - and their only defence will be the hypocrisy of enacting a double-standard. In fact, we're probably there already with that one after the Repubs blocked all Democrat judicial nominees in the 18 months up to the 2016 election. How do these people not see that they're shooting themselves in the foot, unless, that is, they're absolutely assured that they'll always hold the reins of power?

Because they don't have political opponents, they have spiritual opponents. Where you might see certain doom, they see a chance for God to step in and intervene on their behalf. They have faith that what they are doing is right in God's eyes.

Also, some of them expect the conflict to destroy government. That's what they want.

The Republicans control the executive branch (and therefore the judicial branch) despite getting 3 million fewer votes. The Republicans control the Senate despite getting tens of millions fewer votes.

The Republicans do it because they can. They do it because they can be as extreme as they want to be and pay no price for it. They can be as crazy as they want to be and still keep winning. The anti-democratic nature of our "democracy" incentivises extremism on the right and moderation on the left. The Republicans keep chasing the most far right voters, and the Democrats keep chasing the center, and so the whole thing just keeps sliding right toward fascism.

Great system those brilliant founding fathers designed, eh?

It works both ways. If the Dems pack the court, you can bet the GOP will return the favor later. I already pity the next Dem President dealing with a GOP House, they'll be voting articles of impeachment regularly. What goes around comes around, sauces for ganders and geese, turnabout's fair play, etc etc etc. It ain't nothing new, y'all, this is the way shit works.

Obamacare is set up to cover 2021. If the Trump court manages to cancel it, that would start 2022. Biden has a year to fix healthcare. 2 years to fix everything else, as GOP will grab some seats 2022.
