Re: The Trump Pandemic
In my first year of teaching science, I wanted to demonstrate the production of chlorine gas, which I was going to collect in gas jars, over water. I had 3 gas jars ready...
It worked fine, but I had mixed a shit load of the reagents - I filled the 3 gas jars easily, but the chlorine kept bubbling away. I had to evacuate the science lab - the principal was not impressed...

Re: The Trump Pandemic
We did the same and there were about 6 jars standing ready on the bench. We did not have fancy gas cupboards in those days as safety was never considered. Anyway these jars were standing there and one idiot slid the glass plate on the top and took a deep breath. I had never seen someone go from white to green and then purple. He collapsed of course but no ambulance was called. He just was taken to the matrons office where he lay on the bed for an hour.

Re: The Trump Pandemic
My first chemistry set was boring, not inspiring my career. The instructions were in German, and I could read maybe Swedish at the time. But, if you took a teaspoonful from each jar and mixed it, you got a good stink bomb.

Re: The Trump Pandemic
I worked with the pipefitters building scaffolding for them. Sometimes I would be 50 feet up on a scaffold when the leak occurred, and getting out would take a while. The alarms were disconnected, the reason was that apparently they would blare practically continuously if left on. Also, hardly anybody needed to be on that floor, except when construction was happening. All of us tradesmen got blasted quite often, and the nurse would just give us a glass of something that tasted like cough syrup.rainbow wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 8:11 amWoodbutcher wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 1:08 amI, on the other hand, lost my sense of smell 40 odd years ago when I worked in an old paper mill bleach plant during construction. The chlorine leaks were awesome!
...working in bleach plant at mill years ago, we had to wear a gas mask all the time. They did warn us to put it on whenever we could smell the Cl2. Apparently by the second breath you could be dead. Never tested them on that.

Re: The Trump Pandemic
The first chemistry lesson in Finland was the teacher mixing ingredients to produce fluorine gas and he demonstrated how it etches glass. He then sent the piece of glass around the room with a knife so we could trace the depth of the etching. One guy knew a trick, he could scare you by making it look and feel like he stabbed you in the leg by pinching it with the knife hand. He then demonstrated how it was done on his own leg, but fumbled and stuck the knife three inches into his thigh. We carried him out to the ambulance leaving a trail of blood through the school. Best lesson ever!JimC wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 9:03 amIn my first year of teaching science, I wanted to demonstrate the production of chlorine gas, which I was going to collect in gas jars, over water. I was in some labs for years that they had done some government work in. It involved HF and had etched all the windows. They replaced all the glass, but left the interiors somewhat rusting.

Several days over 100 new cases. It's never gone to 120.
The total number of cases in the county is now at 6,233, and the number of deaths remains at 24.

I was wrong, there was a day with 165 cases about a week back.

Re: The Trump Pandemic
Our new case numbers for Victoria (population around 6.5 million) were only 5 in the last 24 hours, but that may partially be down to less weekend testing...
However, it's headed in the right direction. They've brought back the next major lifting of restrictions by a week to October 19th, if the numbers continue to decline...
Nice little twist - a prominent member of the opposition Liberal party had launched court action (due to be heard in court today) asking that the government-mandated curfew be quashed (as part of a cynical political ploy, naturally - the opposition are weasels...). As part of the relatively minor staged lifting of restrictions yesterday (but as a "surprise" addition), the government ended the curfew at midnight last night, so I guess the court case is moot...

Re: The Trump Pandemic
Great seeing the numbers so low. Not that we can trust the numbers. They are artificially high for the purposes of controlling us. Oh wait, no that's not right.. they are artificially low so that the government can be praised for getting numbers down so low.
