From everything I can discover, this stranding is not human-caused. There seems to be a tragic effect of geography on these very social whales...

It's in a pretty remote part of Tasmania, Macquarie Harbour, with one small tourist town. I've been there, and taken a boat cruise - absolutely beautiful, but a very narrow entrance with treacherous sandbars; I can well imagine it being a death trap for a pod of pilot whales...

The whale rescuer guys have been doing an amazing job, saving more than they thought possible:

Rescuers and volunteers have now freed 94 whales after a mass stranding on Tasmania's West Coast, with authorities hopeful 12 more can be saved.
About 60 rescuers worked to free another 18 whales from a sandbar at Macquarie Harbour near Strahan yesterday, taking the total number of saved mammals to 88.
Six more were freed this morning.
Conditions have taken their toll on workers who have dealt with high winds and rain, as well as the emotional toll of hundreds of whale deaths.
"I think everyone's tired and feeling the fatigue. They've been long days. The people on site working on the water are those doing it hardest," incident controller Nic Deka said.
