A recent article in NewScientist discussed the reducing death rate, and canvassed a number of possibilities, including an evolutionary change in the virus biology, but also other possible factors such as a reduction in the proportion of highly susceptible people (who died in the first wave) or simply much better medical techniques, such as steroids for the OTT inflammation...

You know we were discussing this a few months back. The very same question about the USA. What I said then proved right: It just took some weeks delay to see the rising numbers of infections in the death statistics. (Because the virus first has to travel from the younger to the older population and then it takes some more time for people to die)

The idea being that although the mask isn't 100% effective it lowers the viral load, and this reduces the severity of infection.

There's lots of hypothesis around. Another one is the temperature in the throat. Some say the symptoms will get worse when people have colder throats.

I just point to the US. Deaths increased some weeks after infections rose because restrictions were reduced. The same is now starting to happen in France.

with college starting, and some in class instruction, the cases are up, no flattening. But as they are mainly young people getting it now, no major surge in deaths, they have been at 20 for some time.
