Cheesy, but interesting...

I had seen that before, I think, so did not watch it all the first time.

Vivaldi was never lost, as nearly every baroque composer had the printed Opus 3 and Opus 8 works, in the 1700s. There are printed copies still around, as the paper was not crap paper then. And Vivaldi in fact wrote 6 concertos with an organ part.

Nobody has written an interesting biography of Vivaldi. He left behind all those manuscripts and a bunch of begging letters to rich customers to whom he peddled concertos. There is a story that goes with Vivaldi, but it is not the story of him, but of the orphanage for which he wrote hundreds of concertos.

The "lost" Vivaldi (the opus works) are available in facsimile of the printed 1710-1720 publications, which are public domain, so you can print out the parts and have your orchestra play them. The problem was that the Dutch printer, Estienne Roger, tended to "correct" the Vivaldi works so they were easier to play. The library is here.

The 6 concertos that Bach ripped off from Vivaldi are listed here. Only the 4 harpsichord one is played much, though the other three Opus 3 works should have been easy for any competent musicologist to figure out. Vivaldi concertos run 10-13 minutes, Bach ones some 15-20.

Bach wrote his Italianate Concerti for a job application.

Looking at a number of discs I have in a box in the basement, centered around Dresden in the early 1700s. Vivaldi, Zelenka and the local concertmaster of the court Pisendel.

Bizarre that I would get so involved in this little corner of baroque music. I had all the Vivaldi related to this on the open shelf in the CD room, it was just this other stuff I dug out. I mean, the country is going to hell with a do nothing president, a virus is turning out to be very persistent and the pandemic is lasting some 2 years. Biden may yet die of it while president.

Yet I am quite fascinated, reading every booklet that the musicologist compiled to go with each disc. Escapism? There are no books on this.

The Zelenka is rather light music, much less heavy handed that Vivaldi.

Added: there is a 172 dollar pamphlet on Pisendel in German.

Though there is some local influence, a lot of these composers spent time in Italy, where there was a more active music life. It happened to be the period that Vivaldi was popular there, so they got trained in that style. many of the Dresden produced works were in 3 movement Italian style, rather than the dance movements and overtures that Bach and Telemann followed. Zelenka was Czech born but composed for the Dresden court.

Taking my harp elsewhere. The inspiration for the Mudarra piece is a mystery.

The identity of the Ludovico to whom the “Harp Fantasia” is dedicated cannot be established with absolute certainty, although all evidence points to a minstrel employed by Ferdinand the Catholic who reigned jointly with Isabel of Castille from 1469 to 1502. According to documents gathered by the nineteenth-century music historian Barbieri and cited by Pujol in his study on Mudarra, a musician named “Ludovico el del Arpa” was employed at that court. It appears that this harpist was of extraordinary skill and repute, and that he became something of a legendary figure. He is probably the same harpist that the theorist Juan Bermudo mentions in his Declaracion de de instrumentos musicales, (Ossuna, 1555).

And, with the challenge to play all my discs once more, I took a stack of guitar and lute recordings to go through. I am missing one lute player that also took up the vihuela for a few discs. So instead of discarding any, I have ordered one more, not this player but Christopher Wilson with similar tunes:

Dutch Bach ocieties are the best Bach societies.

I was looking at two discs of music of Spain. The Bream disc is the better of the two, Segovia not bad either. I have one CD
http://www.julianbreamguitar.com/-guita ... spain.html
which was made up of two LP's worth of music, but cutting off a few songs. The whole set (on 6CDs) of spanish music is now on mp3, 20 dollars on Amazon. I have most of this music by other famous players so not going for the download even.
