Re: Yet more problematic stuff
Yes. The divide between our purported ideals and reality is a recurrent theme. Only this time it seems we are comically at odds with our ideals. It is a shit circus, a bad trip.

Re: Yet more problematic stuff
I just mean that we seem to have arrived at a cultural moment where racism has become one of the main prisms through which we view society - at least in terms of our broad public discourse.Sean Hayden wrote:What do you mean?

Thank you. I thought you meant something like that. I think there's probably some overreach happening when racism features as an explanation for so much.

Re: Yet more problematic stuff
Perhaps - but it seems so relevant at the moment doesn't it(?) George Floyd and BLM has led us, to some extent, to questions like: Who are we? Are we a racist society; are we a sexist society; are we an ableist society etc? Focusing on these questions might mean we fall to defining ourselves by our collective failures or, like TV talking head Dr David Starkey did recently in the UK, by championing those exact same things as examples of what has and continues to make us a great society. I'm not saying racism, sexism, or ableism aren't real, or real problems but, being a bit of a lefty an'all, I see these things as expressions of a broader system - one which categorises people by simple normative types (White, Male, Able-bodied, etc) and rejects those (in part or in whole) whose views and/or experience fall outside of those perceived norms. Racism et al seem to have become subjects through which we are being made aware of the unbalanced nature of power in our social relations and by which we can articulate and discuss where 'normal' actually is, isn't, and/or should be.Sean Hayden wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 5:44 amThank you. '"All Combat Takes Place at Night": Kyle Rittenhouse’s Lawyer Urges Trump Fans to "Dust Off" Gun Rights'
The lawyer for Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse is on a Twitter tear again—this time, urging supporters to “dust off those Second Amendment rights” and not let China “steal” the election from lame-duck President Trump.
“Time to dust off those Second Amendment rights. Founders put it there for a very specific reason,” attorney John Pierce tweeted Wednesday night.
In another tweet, Pierce wrote, “Trump won in a landslide. The triad of Big Tech, mainstream media and the CCP is trying to steal it. Obvious. Do not let them. Do not give an inch. Fight over every single hedgerow. Nothing less than our freedom hangs in the balance.” The post included hashtags: #FightBack, #TrumpWon and #1775.
Pierce then shared an image of Washington Crossing the Delaware—an oil painting commemorating General George Washington and the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War—with the words: “All combat takes place at night.”
...
Some Twitter users have called out Pierce for trying to “incite violence.”
Asked whether he was actually encouraging people to bear arms to defend Trump, Pierce told The Daily Beast, “Of course not. Just metaphors.”
