11 GOP congressional nominees support QAnon conspiracy

At least 11 Republican congressional nominees have publicly supported or defended the QAnon conspiracy theory movement or some of its tenets — and more aligned with the movement may still find a way onto ballots this year.

Why it matters: Their progress shows how a fringe online forum built on unsubstantiated claims and flagged as a threat by the FBI is seeking a foothold in the U.S. political mainstream.

QAnon is a far-right conspiracy theory that purports without proof that posts by an anonymous internet user from within the federal government are alluding to a secret war that the "deep state" is waging against President Trump.

Poor little Newtie, people just pick on him. I've mentioned my opinion of Newt Gingrish and his effect on politics in the US before--here's an analysis that goes in depth on his legacy, as if anybody wanted it.

When I describe a Republican politician who rose the political ladder by smearing his political opponents with lies and attacking the system as corrupt, and who never expanded his core base while burning bridges with many of his onetime supporters, you might probably would assume I'm talking about Donald Trump. And you would be correct. Except there's another famous GOP politician cut from that same cloth who helped pave the way for Trump: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

As Princeton professor and CNN contributor Julian Zelizer lays out is his new book, "Burning Down the House: Newt Gingrich, the Fall of a Speaker, and the Rise of the New Republican Party," Gingrich was Trump before Trump. Zelizer explained in his recent visit to "Salon Talks" that Gingrich's "ruthless partisanship" and "political wrecking-ball" style helped usher in a new style of partisan politics. Before Gingrich, members of Congress in opposing parties were far more cordial with each other. Gingrich changed all that as the original "own the libs" conservative — who like Trump, he seemed to care more about garnering headlines and acquiring power (at any and all costs) than actually governing.

Gingrich led the GOP to a smashing victory in the 1994 midterm elections, gaining 54 seats in the House (and eight in the Senate) to win a congressional majority for the first time in 40 years. Gingrich's famous "Contract With America" was clearly a precursor to Trump's "Make America Great Again" agenda, but with a lot more legislative details.) Gingrich became speaker of the House in a major political realignment — but it all came crashing down just a few years later, when he was forced from power after the 1998 midterms, in large part because of Gingrich's scorched-earth style of politics as he championed the impeachment of Bill Clinton.

'Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says Georgia governor's actions are "simply bizarre"'

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms dismissed efforts by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to challenge orders mandating masks and enforcing social distancing measures amid a spike in coronavirus cases as "simply bizarre," saying the Republican governor has mounted an "unusual" game of finger-pointing.

"The governor has done many things as of late and said many things as of late that, quite frankly, are simply bizarre," Bottoms said Sunday on "Face the Nation." "He filed a 124-plus-page lawsuit against me this week calling for an emergency injunction to stop me from speaking about his orders. If the governor of this state had his way, I would not be allowed to speak with you today. And so this blame game is most unusual."

Kemp last week banned cities and counties in Georgia from ordering residents to wear masks or face coverings in public. More than a dozen local governments, including Atlanta, have issued mask mandates, while Kemp has pushed for the wearing of face coverings to be voluntary.

Generally, in Oz, there has mostly been unity between the states and the feds in tackling the problem, and between the 2 main parties. There is a little bit of spite at times, with opposition leaders quick to jump on perceived mistakes, and all the other states are picking on us Victorians a bit (although banning us from travelling to their states is quite reasonable in current circumstances). However, even with these provisos, the consistent messages have been, firstly, we're all in this together, and secondly, that government actions at both state and federal levels must be driven by rational, medical advice...
