Re: Straya!
Just heard a report on the BBC World Service saying that the combination of chlamydia in the Koala population and the rampant fires may have placed so much pressure on the species to have now made it 'functionally extinct' - that's, there's still Koalas but the population isn't large or healthy enough to maintain a reproductive population.

Re: Straya!
There are places where that is true, but they are a widespread species, geographically, and with some help from humans, should manage to hold their own in their remaining habitat.

Note the weasle word in "may have". It's bullshit. Last time I checked bushfires have burnt out 0.6% of Australia's land mass. There is no evidence that they have focused on all areas that are critical for the survival of koalas as a species.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2020 2:19 amJust heard a report on the BBC World Service saying that the combination of chlamydia in the Koala population and the rampant fires may have placed so much pressure on the species to have now made it 'functionally extinct' - that's, there's still Koalas but the population isn't large or healthy enough to maintain a reproductive population.

A lot of the remaining habitat is being cleared for farming, and being converted into housing developments. The poor animal is fucked.

A public warning for a funnel-web spider "bonanza" has been issued as hot and wet conditions coax the amorous arachnoids from bushland and gardens.
Rainfall across the weekend paired with summery temperatures have created idyllic tropical conditions in which funnel-web spiders "thrive within", said Australian Reptile Park keeper Jake Meney.
The summer months mark mating season for the spiders.

Watch out for them saucy spiders Jim. Its interesting isn't it, how the life cycle of many creatures depends on certain environmental conditions. For example, I can only make love when the river is in spate, and my ex could only make love to someone with a better car than me.

Australia Asks Other Nations To Send Backup Politicians, To Help Deal With Bushfire Crisis
https://www.theshovel.com.au/2020/01/12 ... %ef%bb%bf/
“The Australian politicians were really caught by surprise by this bushfire season. And fair enough too – apart from dozens of scientific reports released since 2007 that predicted extended and more severe bushfire seasons starting in 2020, there was no way to foresee this. So they need all the help they can get,” a spokesperson for the international contingent said.

Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
