Airplane and airline stuff

Aside from the 737 Max fiasco, Boeing will have to redesign and replace engine covers on 7000 planes:

737 has been grounded by most users, now a n industry insider won't use the 787... man, what"s become of the time when Boeing was the fracking standard for good planes?

From that story:
Barnett says the 787 facility was run by a new leadership team that had been transferred in from St Louis, MO, with a background in overseeing military contracts, and that they prioritized production speed over airworthiness and safety.

He says that the culture of poor safety began in 2011 or 2012, with top management ordering employees not to document defects, but that this graduated to "ignoring safety issues and the defective parts." Barnett pursued this internally, exhausting every internal process and facing workplace retaliation before going to federal regulators like the FAA and OSHA, which resulted in even more retaliation, and, eventually, blackballing across the aviation industry.

Snip

For example, the process of tightening the titanium nuts on the floorboard-bolts caused 3"-long, razor sharp titanium slivers to cascade into the compartment where all the sensitive avionics wiring ran.

Some of these shards have already caused fires in 787s.

Boing Boing excerpted their article from a story in the Corporate Crime Reporter. It's a longer read, but the additional details make the issues relating to the 787 Dreamliner a lot more worrying. After reading it I will certainly take active measures to not fly in them once they are airborne again. At least not unless Boeing has fixed the managerial problems and attitudes toward production procedures. The administrative layer at its Charlestown factory is beyond repair. It needs to be fired, which is unlikely to happen just now.

London (CNN Business)An Irish company that sells and leases aircraft has filed a lawsuit seeking to cancel an order for 22 of Boeing's 737 Max jets and collect at least $185 million in damages.

The company, Timaero, alleged in documents filed Tuesday in a US district court that Boeing (BA) had acted fraudulently in selling the troubled aircraft.
"Boeing deliberately and knowingly failed to disclose ... the safety issues associated with the design of the 737 Max," the company said.

Boeing 787 Max did not know how to deal with stalls.

Now some similar automatic system flies space capsule into wrong orbit.

yeah right, because the guy was THE one cause for the trouble with quality control and security procedures... man, they need to fire a lot more people than him before I can start trusting them again.

Well he was bad for business. Right decision about a year ago was to scrap the Max as a failure, not fix the patch on the other patch. Go back to making 737-800.

CEOs are very bad at big decisions.

https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/nationa ... d/1960955/

and
In a recent interview with Corporate Crime Reporter, Barnett said he would "change flights before I would fly a 787. I've told my family — please don't fly a 787."
For example, one audit uncovered that approximately 25 percent of oxygen masks didn't work. Defective parts became lost in the system, only to be later discovered installed on flying aircraft. Barnett particularly recalls several defective bulkheads being installed without having been repaired.

Another major issue were the metal slivers. When securing the plane's floorboard with titanium fasteners, 3-inch-long slivers of razor-sharp metal would fall down into the compartment where the aircraft's sensitive electronic equipment lies.
