Learning from The Beatles estate and Pnik Floyd, the Zappa estate now exists only to sell you stuff you already have but in a slightly different package and at a strikingly inflated price.
Rationalia relies on voluntary donations. There is no obligation of course, but if you value this place and want to see it continue please consider making a small donation towards the forum's running costs.
Details on how to do that can be found here.

They are actually broke. The estate may provide some cash flow to the heirs, but they are also in debt.

Then they should let Dweezil play any of his dad's tunes on tour rather than threatening him with legal action.

wiki
As beneficiaries only, Moon and Dweezil will not see any money from the trust until it is profitable—in 2016, it was "millions of dollars in debt"—and must seek permission from Ahmet, the trustee, to make money off of their father's music or merchandise bearing his name.

https://www.latimes.com/projects/la-ca- ... pa-legacy/
As trustee of the Zappa Family Trust, Ahmet is responsible for turning these tapes into money. Before she died, Gail gave him a crash-course in running the business. As she weakened, he assumed more responsibility. Eventually, said Ahmet, “We had a family meeting and my mother explained to the rest of the kids that I was taking over.”
Zappa fans faithfully buy posthumous records, but they just make a small profit or break even.

They do own the tapes and remasters and some profit is made from the original studio recordings, now on Zappa records.

wiki:
The Zappa Family Trust regained control of Frank Zappa's recorded output and made a distribution deal with Universal Music Enterprises to reissue the recordings on the Zappa and Barking Pumpkin labels

The magic marketing term is "remastered".

If anything the Zappa estate started this long before the rest. Zappa produced so many versions of his songs. He kept literally hundreds of hours of tape and even when he was alive he was recycling some of it. Of course some of the extreme fans actually revelled in this and ate it all up.

They really do seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel now though.

They put out some good stuff the first 10 years after he died. But I think the major income to the trust is still the studio recordings catalog. And they managed to use the CD era with Läther type items.

Now with downloads only the Taylor Swifts, Eagles and Beatles Stones etc make money.

I wonders if any of the Zappa album or studio masters were lost in UMG's massive warehouse fire in 2008?

No, they keep most mastered tapes and some original multitracks. Zappa had some late 60s and early 70s material redone in the 80s with bass and drums rerecorded. Fans never liked those.

More plot here

poor Jeff, he left playing comedy music, mostly. Frank liked Grand Funk.

Jeff made an album. And was forgotten, mostly.

Jeff was replaced by Jim Pons in the touring band from this point on. Not only was Jim a Mother, he was also a Turtle!

not sure which one he is on the album cover

Mark's voice is shot. Howard "Happy Together" Kaylan is doing quite well in his 70s. He sang the big hit.
