During a speech to the National Rifle Association in May last year Donald Trump said “98 percent of mass public shootings in the United States since 1950 have taken place in gun-free zones.” This is of course a joke. 0% of mass shootings in the USA take place in gun-free zones because there aren't any.

Of course anybody can declare a home, a school, a city, a county or an entire state a gun-free zone, but a mere declaration does not make it so as long as it is unenforceable. It is pretty fucking useless for one state to have strict regulations concerning the private ownership of guns, outlaw the possession of semi-automatic rifles, or whatever, when the neighbouring state has no such restriction and there are no border controls. Similarly, you can legislate schools into becoming gun-free zones, but unless you install metal detectors at all entry points and provide armed and trained guards to enforce the no gun rule, you may as well not bother passing any legislation at all.

Why would Canadian gun-crime rise? Are we importing a lot of Yankees or something?

It's not the laws I'm defending. It's the right for people to be as well-armed as the criminals and government around them.

If you want to deny the existence of gun-free zones, like some kind of reality-denying play to avoid facts, that's ok, but most of the mass shootings tend to target people who are least able to defend themselves.

Almost all of the mass shootings I've heard of were stopped by a good guy with a gun. I don't know what the right answer is, but it sure seems wrong to just whine that guns shouldn't be allowed.

Reality isn't agreeable to gun-free fantasies.
