I was reading some posts in Redddit on Zappa. Young people discovering Zappa, listening on crappy laptop computer etc. The new people seem to "get" Hot Rats, bu then do not "get" stuff like this, recorded the same year

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

Hot Rats is turning 50. There were no left over tracks from it other than this jam. Hard to see how they will celebrate it at Zappa.com. Except there is a book on the sessions. Of the Mothers, obny Underwood was heavily involved.

It has the sound of a jam. I don’t feel Frank’s stamp on it really.

Zappa was a musical genius.

Personally, I would reserve the term 'musical genius' for somebody who changed Music at large in a way it couldn't have changed otherwise - so you're probably right Rum. :D For me Zappa combines the classical and jazz traditions of compositional integrity and virtuosity in performance with the tradition-smashing sensibilities of artistic Modernism and re-examining of cultural trope from Pop Art culture, with a bit of Beat poetry and abstract expressionism thrown - all of which he spread with a healthy dose of cynicism about the music industry, a tart set of political and moral convictions, and a wicked sense of humour.

The man and his music have integrity.

I’ve kind of jettisoned all the ‘funny’ stuff, the doubtful values expressed in many of his lyrics though I do find there’s more to the discordant and randon noise stuff than I first appreciated, it is his sheer musicality that shines. It’s almost as if he is channeling from some musical sphere most of us can’t access.

Most of his music only starts to work when you're interested in music that goes beyond standard patterns and when you're willing to listen repeatedly to albums that don't appeal at once.
Most people call that brainwashing. I guess if you'll just accept Zappa into your heart you'll get it.

The only Zappa show I got to, 74 or 75, opened with Stink Foot. Stones 81 opened with Under My Thumb. I only remember the first one of either. But the Stones had a live record of the tour, Still Life.

The newly released Orchestral Favorites 3CD does not a whole lot to the previous set of classical/orchestral works. It was mostly on disc 1, and disc 3 is less well rehearsed. Featuring here, and elsewhere is the Zappa pastiche Bogus Pomp. It does not make a lot of sense unless you have 200 Motels in some form. Here is a table
http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/songs/Bogus_Pomp.html

i don't like the London Symphony version as much as this one
