I don't think so. We have now seen a president ignoring the courts and congress. The next one may not be so inept and lacking a political goal. We will have a dictator if we don't fix the checks and balances.

I think you’re right to worry about those things. However, when discussing our history of foreign affairs, any individual president takes on less importance –in my opinion—than what have been our long-term goals and how we have gone about achieving them.

I’ve had this conversation many times in my life. I view the US as incredibly successful, and while I appreciate luck’s contribution to all things, I believe we have largely been able to maintain our position by remaining faithful to a philosophy that is shared by both parties.

It’s that philosophy that I’d like to see Democrats seriously challenge.
