Re: Prayers before Legislative Bodies
I was hoping you'd sarcastically quote a forum member's post explaining that there is a good, secular rationale for having governments cover the cost of renovating churches. And no, the necessity to not break treaties does not qualify.

well, churches are public monuments and works of art. They might be state property and lent or rented to cultual associations for the purpose of religious practice while still available to the public to visit and admire when services are not being performed (basically, that's how it's done here)

Re: Prayers before Legislative Bodies
If that's true, then that's another massive mixing of church and state. In the US, churches are never State property, nor are they lent or rented to cultural associations for the purpose of religious practice. A church is a private institution here. For the State to own churches here would result in a massive public outcry under the Establishment Clause.Svartalf wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 11:58 amwell, churches are public monuments and works of art. I can't even stand the Sheriffs riding around with "In God We Trust" plastered on their vehicles. Why is that okay?

It's everywhere! Why are they allowed to do this? Let's just move their operations into the churches and call them morality police...

Re: Prayers before Legislative Bodies
In the UK the C of E still owns large chunks of land and it still keeps it very rich as a result, from rents, leases and so on. Except for national monuments (I think St Paul’s in London might be one) the Church of England funds its own upkeep of property.
Odd, given there is no separation of church and state.

Re: Prayers before Legislative Bodies
The police issue is a serious one. I don't know if you've noticed but it's become normal to talk about who would win in an armed conflict between the progressive left in this country and the right. That's not a good conversation. It has even reached the highest levels of government. Who do the majority of police and military support? --yeah-- I don't worry about them actually winning any conflict, they are overlooking that it isn't just other Americans who don't like them, but they represent a real weakness and threat to be exploited.
