The key difference is that, unlike a newspaper, they are not generating their own content. If you want to put Twitter and Facebook into a very general "media" category, fine, but they are very different beasts from print or broadcast media...

Media is just the plural of medium, which is "an agency or means of doing something," so without some modifier it's a pretty amorphous term. It seems like we got in trouble when we shortened "the News Media" to just "the Media."

So which media are we talking about here, social or news?
