The design is a 737 fixer upper. The plane tends to stall so they put in a ”nose dive program.” To get out of the stall. The pilot needs to have a big nose dive ON/OFF button. The Ethiopians probbly were not trained on the ”emergency” feature that causes emergencies.

Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

Oh goody. A binary choice - stall, then crash, or nose-dive straight into the ground...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

The US government shutdown that Trump said he was 'proud of' added five weeks to the implementation of any fix on the Boeing planes.
... US officials have also blamed part of the delay on this year’s government shutdown — saying it halted work for at least five weeks.

Ever since the arrival of Airbus Boeing has used every trick in the book to disrupt Airbus sales.
The amazing story of how the Airbus A320 became the Boeing 737’s greatest rival
The Airbus A320 is the second best-selling airliner of all time behind the Boeing 737.
Through the end of November, Airbus has sold 14,421 aircraft belonging to the A320-family compared to 15,026 orders for the Boeing 737.
Over the years, Airbus has expanded the A320 into a family of jets including the stretched A321 as well as the smaller A319 and A318.
The A320 family is also known for its innovative use of fly-by-wire control systems as well as a pioneering of cockpit commonality.
