It might not be achievable in absolute terms, but it's worth aiming at - like reducing infant mortality to zero, or irradiating malaria.
I like silly, pie in the sky as much as the next guy, but this isn't practical.

Even if we can achieve perfect efficiency in energy use, and scrub all our exhalations, we will be making heat.

More and more heat.

The earth will be ruined. Or we'll have to develop big fins for earth.

Who's arguing for perfect efficiency - coz it wasn't me? :coffee:

I wasn't talking about facts, if you look back and read it again, I said that no matter how well we improve efficiency, we will still be making too much heat for earth to dissipate.

So a giant fin, or such. This isn't my idea, by the way, but to get an idea of scale, the author I stole it from had the fictional ability to move planets, 5 at a time, by using a sun as an engine.

So BIG thinks. If Brian wanted to bring infant mortality to zero, reduce c02 emissions to similar levels, then we will still have the problem of our waste heat.

And I don't care if you think facts are important. In your actions (which speak louder than your words) you value reason over empiricism. I can respect that you see the world that way, but it isn't the way I see it.

Global warming isn't caused by human activity making heat. It's caused by solar radiation being trapped after it radiates as heat from the surface of the earth.

I'm talking about an imaginary ideal (like 'zero infant mortality') as a target, and how reducing c02 would leave us with still another heat problem.

But I understand if you can't follow fantasy outside your doctrines.

How many times does it need to be said to you that generated heat is not a problem? I mean seriously, how can you continue to miss the point so many times?

You seem incapable of following an argument. If we were to generate all the power we need from non-fossil fuel sources, then, when the atmospheric levels of CO2 stabilise, the world will cease to warm. Your absurd "fin" idea (or anything else to cool the Earth) would be utterly unnecessary, as the remaining waste heat from human activities would be an insignificant part of the world's heat balance. So no, we would not be "making too much heat for earth to dissipate" in the slightest - global warming is all about greenhouse gases, not waste heat from human industry.

And you seem stuck in the spurious notion that your pontifications here have to be wise and correct, each and every one.

This attachment to the reality as you understand it is cute and everything, but I was talking about a spec-fiction story from awhile ago.

See, in this world, the puny problems like 'global warming due to greenhouse gas' were long-solved, and this was the result - a need to dissipate the heat generated by human activity.

Of course, you stick to reality. Your handle on it - especially HERE - is critical to the global warming solution.

Don't ever waver, and don't even THINK of anything else around the issue...it is FAR too serious to speak lightly about. Someone's grandchildren might lose their expensive waterfront real estate holdings, for one thing.
