Waymo Robotic Taxi Rolled Out in Arizona

Post by Forty Two » Wed Dec 05, 2018 8:20 pm

The wave of the future is upon us - https://www.latimes.com/business/autos/ ... story.html

It's basically Uber/Lyft for robot cars. No driver to pay or tip.

What they need to do with this is make it subscription based, where you can pay monthly and get all the rides you want, or up to a certain number, and then it's solid. I would consider having the robot car pick me up from home and take me to the office, and back. If the cost were less than financing a car and paying insurance, then it may make owning a car relatively unnecessary. There just needs to be enough of them around so that people are assured of getting them when need be. That's the trouble. Otherwise, I would buy a robot car.

But robot cars would make mass transport possible for suburbia. "Train station" can be anywhere, and as long as the "train" is nearby, it can divert to pick up other customers and drop them off on the way to different destinations. A complex computer program could have various robot buses driving pre-set routes that can divert here and there. The big problem with trains is that train stations are far away from suburbia, so you have to drive there -- and bus stops, while somewhat closer, still require you to get to the bus stop. If there were fleets of buses all over, and you can divert one to your house, that would be a game-changer.

We have special lanes for some buses in Melbourne - I take one when I want to go into the city centre. I could imagine them being robotic more easily that private cars...

Private cars are already robotic. The Teslas are self-driving.

I'd far rather deal with a robot car than a blue-haired 90 year old bint who can't see over the fucking steering wheel.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I thought we would get the ability to 'slave' our vehicle to one ahead for long trips. I guess that is going to be passed by.
I like the idea of robot transit, but it kind of leaves me with nowhere to hide all my purchases, contraband etc. while strolling around downtown. Maybe if they couple it with a decent delivery system for your stuff...like a shuttle-pod which will go to your home, as securely as the mail.

Part of the reason we take our vehicles out is to have a mobile base to lock up stuff. Maybe my life is weird.

Will these things be able to detect illegal activity, and perform a sort of 'citizens arrest' by rerouting to the police station? (or directly to the interment camp)

It is actually quite easy. A woman has at least one X chromosome.

If the Chinese develop them, probably yes.

So yes then.

You could have just said yes.

Clearly rEv meant that such actions could occur in China, given their nasty authoritarian tendencies, but you would have to have Galaxian-level paranoia to expect such a situation in western democracies...

So if it is your job to write the rules, what would you do?

You discover, through telemetry, that a dangerous criminal is in your robo-cab. Do you:
1) Allow them to continue to their destination unmolested.
2) Redirect the robo-cab to the police station.
3) Alert authorities to meet the robo-cab at the destination.
4) Have robo-cab pull over and shut-down
5) Other...?

Seriously, this is a real situation (a lot sooner than I would have expected)

Just ask it this way:

If a racist hate speaker take a robo-cab somewhere, should the technology allow him to reach his destination, or should it (a) take him to the authorities, or (b) decline to give him a platform for transportation. :-D
