Ability is not among the criteria for the office as far as the conservatives are concerned. I dare say they'd rather do without a speaker altogether. If they could get away with it they'd appoint a horse to the job. Make it a native Melbourne Cup winner and they can sell it as an act of 'Strayaness. Millions of Allan Jones fans will approve.

If a year passes and either Turnbull is still Prime Minister of this term or there hasn't been another election, then I'll walk from here to Melbourne to present you with a bottle of gin. ;)
Gonna claim your bottle, Jim? ;)

Look at the bright side. By the time you've finished your walk to Canossa Melbourne you'll no longer be obese.

Best news I heard in a long time:
An exclusive Fairfax-Ipsos poll shows the Coalition has suffered a horror slump in its primary vote from 39 to 33 per cent over the past month amid open disputes on energy and speculation over the leadership.

In its worst result since early last year, the Coalition now trails Labor by 45 to 55 per cent in two-party terms in a result that would cost the government more than 20 seats at a general election.

And that is despite Bill Shorten not exactly being a popular opposition leader...

News Flash:
Malcolm Turnbull has declared the Liberal leadership is vacant.
The background is political infighting about energy policy, fomented by Tony Abbott, former PM and champion of big coal. Whether Turnbull will contest the leadership, or walk away in disgust is an open question...

The opposition Labour leader, Bill Shorten, will be rubbing his hands in glee as the coalition of Liberal and National parties seems to be eating itself alive...

OK, it's a spill of all leadership positions, with Turnbull re-nominating, and probably Peter Dutton of the right his main opponent...

And, I've just seen that Turnbull won, 48 to 35, which is only moderately convincing...

Dutton has quit the ministry, and will wait the requisite month or two before toppling Turnbull in the next leadership spill...

There's talk already that Dutton might take him out as soon as Thursday! Could be risky, as the PM has said he'll quit if he is deposed. Which means the Libs lose their majority depending on the outcome of a by-election in Turnbull's seat.

How safe is his seat? I suppose people get pissed of at having to vote in a by election, and might want to send a message to the Liberal Party.

As for Dutton, only a day or so ago he was saying how he's totally supportive of Malcolm as leader. Whenever a politician says that, you just know that they're holding a knife behind their backs... But I can't see him having another go at the leadership within a week - I think the MPs would see it as even more destabilising...
