Was Uther Pendragon such an evil man ?
So, I saw recently for the umpteenth time that ageless classic: John Boorman's Excalibur... so yada yadda Uther gets the King's Sword, obtains the submission of Cornwall, they go feast the peace in the latter's castle, and Cornwall has his wife Ygraine (portrayed by a very yummy Katrine Boorman) dance for the assembled people... Uther turns mad with desire and launches the war all over again until he can get Marlin to send him to Tintagel under Cornwall's guise to beget Arthur...
all in all it could seem that Uther is the utter bad guy in the matter... then I was reminded of the old legend of Gyges and King Candaul and wondered if Cornwall/Gorlois, by so shamelessly displaying his wife, had not brought it all on his own head.

It's a timeless trope: Corny was showing his wife off like a shiny thing, she was gagging for it, and Uther did a Trump.

History was different from that early eighties movie. Women of the time would have worn chastity belts when the men were of fighting in battle. They weren't stupid, even if they were evil men. Could think it through and everything.

Bug you, , this takes place in the late 400s or 500s, the first chastity belts are attested in the 1400s... the legend of crusaders putting some on their ladies before going to the holy land is just that, a legend.

Don't go all pedantic on me over a arbitrary fact of history. Sure a movie like Excalibur is proof of the Flynn effect in action. Wooden characters to the point of giving wood a bad name, and absolutely hilarious seriousness of story - and I recall at the time it was a massive movie hit. Bigger than Clash of the Titans...which at least was watchable.

I'll go pedantic when I feel like. and I take offence of your dissing what I regard as the yardstick for a masterpiece you can watch over and over without getting tired.

I watch movies in winter when the nights close in. My mood for contrived tedium is at its height in winter.pErvinalia wrote: ↑Thu May 24, 2018 9:22 amCrumple has too many random youtube videos to watch to have time to watch a movie more than once..

Grew up on books not movies. Try telling the under fifties that and they won't believe you.
