Serious Light Speed Discussion

Post by cronus » Thu Mar 15, 2018 7:48 am

Large objects that attain speeds approaching that of light will inevitably spin out of control when they accelerate or decelerate on account of specks of dust carrying massive momentum ? :read:

No.

Somewhat more incoherent than usual...

I've told you before. This is not a logical machine. :read:

Is that even possible?

Well actually..

Imagine a large object (A)t ravelling very fast - doesn't have to be near light speed. If it stops abruptly - say by colliding with a stationary object (B) (relative to object A) then any smaller items on object A would of course continue moving in the same direction of travel due to their momentum. Not sure if that was quite what was being asked but that''s what would happen.

Large objects that attain speeds approaching that of light will have had nearly infinite energy put into them to get to that point.
There is no mechanism in the Universe capable of doing that. So it will never happen.

But you can do it with incredibly small objects, if you build a gigantic Hadron Collider.

You can easily read up on it, and find out what they've observed so far.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

99.99999% of the speed of light is quite sufficient for most practical purposes like interstellar travel.

Like I said, the energy required would be nearly infinite for something as big as a teacup.
And you would have to expend exactly the same at the destination, to slow it down and stop it.

Not really. Nearest star 4 years or so at that speed and more like 50 to a hundred to get a small sample of other stars with possible earth like planets. And of course to see a few hundred more you would be looking at journeys of thousands of years. Interstellar travel looks pretty unreachable as things stand

“When I was in college, I took a terrorism class. ... The thing that was interesting in the class was every time the professor said ‘Al Qaeda’ his shoulders went up, But you know, it is that you don’t say ‘America’ with an intensity, you don’t say ‘England’ with the intensity. You don’t say ‘the army’ with the intensity,” she continued. “... But you say these names [Al Qaeda] because you want that word to carry weight. You want it to be something.” - Ilhan Omar
