But what's changing with Trump is that we aren't even trying to lead on trade anymore. He doesn't see these deals as a way to win friends and influence people, but rather to win manufacturing jobs and influence his approval rating. That might sound like common sense to some people, but it does leave an opening for other countries — yes, China — to negotiate where we're not. The risk, then, is that globalization might not proceed on our terms or with our values.
What, exactly, are "our terms?" What, exactly, are "our values?" Was globalization proceeding over the last 8 years on our terms and our values?

When you pull out, you will never lay out any terms. But they were referring to patents and trademarks.

That isn't true, as negotiations regularly take place before a country signs onto a treaty. Signing a treaty is done after negotiations, not before. That would be like signing a contract and then expecting to negotiate terms afterwards. Pulling out of the TPP puts everything back on the negotiating table.

There won't be any negotiating or deal.

Either you free have trade and get the partners to respect your patents. Or you don't and they copy your patented work and sell your product elsewhere.

The problem with the TPP was not the notion of respect for patents. There already is, by the way, a body of international law regarding patents and other intellectual property.

This silliness that without the TPP we can not possibly have any international trade negotiations is pure bullshit.

"Either you have free trade and get the partners to respect your patents, or you don't?" That's an absurd false choice.

Those can't be enforced. A trading partner is more likely to comply.

You absolutely can't force them into anything if you just tear up free trade.

Trump has no understanding of trade. You don't trade hotels.

China does not respect our patents, but in drugs for example, only break the patents for domestic use, not export.

I agree with you. It was proceeding on neoliberal values. And China was the biggest national benefactor of neoliberalism. It's hard to see how China could negotiate a better deal than they've been getting.

On the subject of the security services, I wonder if it's occurred to Donald Trump yet, that the people that he was picking fights with, are the same people whose job it is to keep him alive?

Just a thought. :thinks:

Not really. The Secret Service runs the President's protection, and it is not under the jurisdiction of the CIA or the FBI.

Nothing absurd here. You need to build trust in your trading partner. You cut off the sensible part, 42.
