Metamagical Themas, a collection of Douglas Hofstadter's columns from Scientific American. Brainhurty in a good way. :)

I have been (re)discovering the SF writer Fredric Brown, master of the short-short. Recommended for those who like their SF slightly pulpy, with a wry twist. Brown was one of the few serious (so to speak) proponents of humor in SF before Douglas Adams.

Wars of the 20th Century by David Shermer. Hefty book, not light reading except in places where - some dry humour shines through.... :nono:

A bunch of books about the Role Playing Game Runequest, I wonder if I could launch a game and need to get myself thoroughly conversant with the game.

In more serious vein, I think I'll start on Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum pretty soon

Probability & Statistics, The Science of Uncertainty

It's really a history of the two.

I'll keep my eye out for that.

There's a chance I'll find it interesting...

I picked it up at the library. It's part of a series of short books covering the histories of various maths. It probably wouldn't tell you anything you don't already know. But it does give some interesting history of the important figures and their contributions to the subjects.

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

I recently read The Martian. A truly excellent book for any science geek. I can't wait to see the movie. Hopefully they left a lot of the humorous stuff in. It was a lot of fun.

Foucault's Pendulum is really good. Or is it? Maybe that's just what they want us to think! :?

Whatever the amount of truth in it, it's really enjoyable, best thing I read in that genre since Holy Blood, Holy Grail
